EdinburghApps 2016 - Edinburgh Council's civic challenge programme. This year the theme is health and wellbeing, with challenges from the Council, Sustrans, NHS and NHS NSS
8. EdinburghApps 2016: The Health & Wellbeing Challenge
“Ch,ch,ch,ch,changes: Turn and face the strange”
–
David Bowie “Changes”
Enabling people to better connect and cope during
key transitions in their lives.
9. As bad for your health as
smoking 15 cigarettes per
day.
The impact of our Health & Social Care
Challenge Theme:
It increases the risk of developing mental health
problems.
Can more than double a
person’s risk of developing
dementia
Increases the risk of
suicide and depression
among adolescents
10. So, what can cause
this?
And when can it be
most prevalent?
Loneliness
During Transitions in Peoples Lives
15. 3. Transitioning from being part of a
“couple” to living alone, e.g.
through divorce, separation or the
death of a partner
16. What does the data from a recent UK study tell us?
68% of adults say they feel lonely either often, always or sometimes
This is most acute among 18 to 34-year-olds, with 83% of this
age group experiencing loneliness
More than a third (38%) of respondents now have less interaction
with people they know than they did five years ago
16% only interact socially with others once a week or less
17. What challenges do we need your ideas to help overcome?
Help create new
“physical”
social networks
Help people to feel
at home in new
accommodation
settings.
Help people to deal positively with feelings of loss & separation
18. What are
the “Trig”
points we
need to
create and
connect?
Identify
people at
risk of
becoming
lonely.
Help sign post
a varied range
of activities of
interest to a
mix of people.
Create ways
of connecting
people who
are lonely with
each other
and with
people who
want to help
19. Some previous ideas to consider:
Develop good
neighbour campaigns
such as “Stair-ember”
and “Bungalow-oney”
– that encourage
people to engage with
neighbours they do not
know
Link with care
housing providers
to allow non-
residents to drop
in and take part in
group activities
Signposting local activities on bus stops /
lamp posts.
Educating young people to enable them
to avoid becoming lonely in the future
Mapping out activities
that people can engage
in.
23. Where do/will they walk?
Dr Cecilia Oram
Smarter Choices Co-ordinator –
Education and Young People
Sustrans Scotland
24. How can we make it more accessible
and more fun to walk to school?
25.
26.
27.
28. Predicting where children will walk
• PRIMARY – generally accompanied
• SECONDARY – generally unaccompanied
29. Barriers
• Safety on the walk to school is highly
subjective and down to perception
• Children and adults don’t always know the
most accessible route to take to walk to school
• People overestimate the time it takes to walk
to a destination
30. Opportunities
• Model most accessible and quickest routes to
walk to school
• Model most accessible and quickest routes
for P7 children to walk to secondary school
• Encourage children and young people to get
off the bus and walk the final part of their
journey
42. Why am I here?

43. Why am I here?

3 I’ve never been to a Hack before #excited !!!
ISD needs to get with the times
44. The problem
Almost 7k deaths
8/100 men
5/100 women living with
heart disease
(ye March 15)
76% P1 healthy weight
(School year 13/14)
In 2006/07, alcohol problems were
estimated to cost Scotland over £2.25
billion
13,030 people started treatment
for Psychological Therapies in
Scotland, an increase of 466 (3.7%)
over the previous quarter.
(qe Sept 15)
45. The challenge – we ‘know’ what we
need to do (?)

http://feed-finder.co.uk/
46. What’s stopping us
• Individuals seem happy to share (some?) personal data pretty widely,
health and care professions are extremely cautious and concerned
about the risks
• There is reluctance to impose (nanny state connotations) actions
which we know (predict?) would have an impact (tax on sugar,
minimum pricing on alcohol, ban cigarettes)
• It’s really hard for people to change habits of a lifetime/lifestyle
47. Opportunities
• How can we get everyone or even just the most effected people on
board - some argue current solutions are helping already well people
get better and simply widening the gap
• How can we use all (more of) the data, information, knowledge we
have to make this happen
• How can we create the right circumstances for all with a part to play
to come together to make this happen
