attention to Asia in order to balance its power in the region, especially paying its heed to Southeast and
East Asia through: Strengthening its alliances—Japan, South Korea, Philippines and Thailand; Improving
relations with emerging powers and other partners—China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Taiwan;
Elevating the important of economic statecraft as a core of its foreign policy in order to fuel the
economic recovery—the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the US-Korea Free Trade Agreement and the
Expanded Economic Engagement (E3); Engaging with multilateral institutions—East Asia Summit, ASEAN
Regional Forum and the new ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting Plus; Supporting for universal values—
Human Rights and democracy in Myanmar; and last but not least, increasing its military presence—
Singapore andAustralia.
Internship Report
Tuesday: I. Read a journal of ASEAN Community, especially of ASEAN Economic Community—its
opportunities and challenges to ASEAN member states, notably Cambodia as the latest member and
classified as CLMV group. We noticed that ASEAN has much work to do such as bridging the

negotiations.

the hydrogen nuclear and rocket test by North Korea, South Korea and the US have started to discuss
the possibility for the deployment of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), which China
has considered as a threat to the regional peace. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Hua, argued that
“Deployment THAAD in South Korea will not help maintain regional peace and stability nor will it lead to
a proper settlement of the current situation”. And he added that “No country shall undermine other
countries’ security interests while pursuing its own”. This simply means South Korea should sacrifice its
own national security for China’s. However, this statement was cold welcomed by a spokesman for
South Korea’s Ministry of Defense saying that “A neighboring country should not try to influence our
securitypolicy”.
