possible and make it a citizen’s festival.”

time this ‘Habba’ is happening and we are likely to come back with it every month in a different place in the city,”
added Kharge.
With such events at regular intervals, the state tourism department plans to make residents aware of the benefits
of environment preservation to protect the city.
The department has made a conscious effort to minimalize the use of plastic during the day. No plastic banner was
used, rather canvas was used to put of banners.

Dollu Kunitha. On the other hand, the festival also boasted of DJ performances to woo the young crowd.
The authorities had also arranged food trucks, flea markets, pot making classes and trampolines near the water
body, for locals to have a fun-filled day. The flea market had ecological products, stalls of terracotta jewellery.
However, the main attraction of the event was the stunts performed on Flyboard, by stuntmen looking like
Spiderman and the Green Goblin, with their water jet boots.
One of the visitors, Darshan said, “The logistics have been managed very well. There are dustbins every 100
meters, drinking water is available after every 100 meters.”

drum dance ‘dollu kunita’, while apart from the street musicians, magicians, jugglers, caricature artists and painters, visitors had an
opportunity to cruise around the lake with fly boards and jet skis.
There were also 20 stalls and a flea market selling organic produce and eco-friendly products, including terracotta jewellery, natural soaps,
millet-based products and jute etc.
“As environment protection is a cause of concern, it is events like these that will create awareness among public and lead to greater
sustainability,” said state Information Technology, Biotechnology and Tourism Minister Priyank M. Kharge in a statement.
“It is great to see so many people participating in support of the cause. The fest is a community building activity to preserve Bengaluru’s
ecology,” he added.

Sankey Tank hosts green habba, draws crowd
BENGALURU: Unlike usual days when the banks of Sankey Tank are dotted with regular walkers and joggers,
Sunday saw the area packed with visitors from across the city who came to be a part of the first ever Namma
Bengaluru Habba.
Organized by the state tourism department, the day-long event was aimed at increasing awareness about the
importance of environmental conservation.
Priyank Kharge, IT, BT, S&T minister, said, "The protection of the environment is a cause of concern today and such
events will create awareness among the public and lead to greater sustainability. It was great to see the
enthusiastic participation of people from across the city, coming forward to support this cause."
Visitors could choose to take part in a wide range of workshops on zero-waste, solid-waste management,
rainwater-harvesting, and green arts and crafts. They could also shop for organic products, clothes and foods in the
flea market and avail of free medical check-ups.
"It's great to see an event like this take place around Sankey Tank. Hopefully, this should encourage both the
people and the government to preserve other lakes and tanks in the city as well, so that they too become
pollutant-free," said Rohini C, a businessman.
The state's rich cultural heritage was on display with Yakshagana and Dollu Kunitha performers stealing the show.
Usha Venkatraman, a resident of the area for 40 years, said, "They should organize such festivals at least twice a
year. Initially the tank and one of the surrounding parks were in a deplorable condition, but since its development
about 15 years ago, it's become lively once again," she said.
Vaishali Deepak, a volunteer for the Isha Foundation's Rally for Rivers initiative, said, "We aim to raise awareness
about the dying rivers in the country. Since we are facing water shortage, with our perennial rivers becoming
seasonal rivers, our main objective is to plant trees on both banks of these rivers. Sadhguru, founder of the Isha
Foundation, will drive through 16 states and meet with the chief ministers to raise awareness on this issue."
Ministers K J George, Sadananda Gowda and Krishna Byre Gowda also attended the event.

62. Hundreds of Bengalureans spent a relaxing, fun-filled Sunday at the first-of-its-kind day long Namma Bengaluru
Habba organised by the Karnataka government at the Sankey tank.
Even though the day experienced light drizzles a few times, it did not hamper the spirit of residents.
People from all walks of life attended the festival and there was plenty for everyone's liking. From food stalls
selling all kinds of mouth-watering fares to kiosks selling jewellery, art, clothes and locally made products, the
Habba was a total hit. There were also cultural programmes that had been organised for the crowd.
Kavitha, a resident of Mattikere, had come to the Habba with her husband Raghu and their son.
"It is so much fun. It's colourful and amazing," the couple said.
Deepika, Harshita and Yashika, three friends, had a perfect Sunday outing at the fest.
"My brother is part of the team which is managing the event. And so we came here," Yashika said as the trio
gorged on ice creams.
Residents from different parts of the city flocked to the habba with friends and family.
KV Ramesh, a businessman, who lives in Malleswaram, and his wife Sujatha are regular walkers at Sankey Tank.
Today was, however, a different experience for them.
"We come here regularly. But today it is so lovely. And the food street is new and quite nice and we didn't have to
go too far," Sujatha said.
The organisers of the Habba also made arrangements to avoid littering and ensured that the venue does not turn
into a dump at the end of the fest.
Here are some pictures from the event.

A green festival for a cause
Sunday evening at Sankey Tank turned out to be quite the experience for the 80,000 odd people at the Namma
Bengaluru Habba.
The brainchild of the state tourism ministry, led by Minister for IT, BT, S & T, Priyank Kharge, the event was
conceptualized by Bengaluru-based Oum Pradutt and team.
"What we were able to offer was nothing short of an international street festival, as the ministry approved all our
concepts and that was the greatest impetus," says Oum, adding, "The initiative came about because people have
been complaining about the sorry state of lakes, with some even frothing, and the general question about what
can be done. It's not enough for us to sit back and blame the government and other civic bodies, because it has to
be community driven. For instance, if I live near a lake and want to protect it, then I have to contribute towards
that. We thought that we needed to get people involved and sensitize them about the dos and don'ts around a
lake. What can you do to not pollute and conserve a lake? The festival was curated with that in mind."
The day-long affair, had something for everyone and was completely green. "For starters, there was no plastic. The
banners were eco-friendly and made of cloth or canvas. The food outlets, most of which had organic offerings,
served on biodegradable plates, while water counters every 50 metres apart urged people to use their own sippers
and have them refilled. The flea market was organic and the workshops were about subjects as diverse as having
66. seed ganeshas that you plant instead of immersing after the festivities and grow a tree, to sustainable
development, terrace gardening and e-waste management, among many others," he explains.
Vistors to the fest were also treated to music and art extravaganzas, as well as activites in jewellery making, finger
puppet making, etc. The highlight of the event, says Shabbeer Ahmed, who hosted it, was the flyboard acrobatics
by a professional, as well as the laser projection that was done on a screen of water.
"The content was all about lakes, including the inception of Sankey tank, the species of birds that nest here, the
trees surrounding it and preservation, etc.," says Oum.
The entire stretch from Bashyam Circle to the other end was cordoned off with the support of residents'
associations. "This would have never been possible without citizen participation. Equally commendable is the
support of civic bodies — from power supply to garbage management, traffic control, law and order and safety
measures," he signs off.

Backed by art & craft, Namma Bengaluru Habba sees crowdswell
Parts of Sankey Road and the premises of Sankey Tank turned into a hub of festivities on Sunday as art and culture brought by
Namma Bengaluru Habba made the weekend a memorable affair for many.
The overcast sky did not deter nearly 80,000 people streamed in to the park throughout the morning and strolled along the walker’s
path punctuated by stalls. Those who had enough of art and craft in the stalls stood at a corner watching a 30-minute Yakshagana
performance.
Tourism Minister Priyank Kharge, Bengaluru Development Minister K J George, MLAs C N Ashwath Narayan and N A Harris came
to the park and took a walk. George couldn’t contain the surprise when a flyboard performer rose up from the water right in front of
them and stayed at a height of 25 feet. The leaders took a selfie with the flyboard surfer in the background.
The pathway along the lake was bedecked with flags of different colours. Artists and craftsmen exhibited their work and talked to
curious visitors with enthusiasm. “We wanted this to be people’s event. So we kept it very informal,” said Kharge.
“It took some effort to convince our son give up a cricket match and come here,” said Sankalp Mitra and Sneha, showing their 10-
year-old son backpedalling a decorated cycle rickshaw. “More events like this should be organised to engage the public in art.
Otherwise, we are left with shopping malls and movies,” they said.
The stalls near the west entrance in Malleshwaram had various art and craft workshops. Techies Pallavi Kerla and Sunaina Kotekar
held ‘Decoupage workshop’ showing how to paint bottles and wooden materials through coloured papers. “Painting is my hobby and
these platforms are really helpful in showcasing our talents,” Sunaina said.
There were ‘classes’ where children learnt various skills ranging from making clay pots to weaving coconut leaves as well as
67. traditional screen printing.
Many did not come for the activities but just to experience the festive mood. “I hope there will be an event like this every month with
the same spirit. The focus should be on art and craft and less on decoration for which the government has to spend a lot. Walking
here itself is a joy compared to driving on the congested Sankey Road,” said Raghavendra M, a banker.

71. Press Release:
BRAND BENGALURU TO GIVE CITY A NEW IDENTITY, A NEW LOOK
Bengaluru joins New York City, Melbourne, Singapore, and other global cities to have its own tourism logo. The
Department of Tourism, Government of Karnataka will unveil the crowd-sourced design.
On December 24, 2017, Bengaluru will wear its brightest, best colours, and take on a new identity.
The Government of Karnataka, and its Department of Tourism, will unveil the city’s very own identity - a unique design
that will firmly establish Brand Bengaluru on the global tourist map, and give every resident a sense of pride. The identity
will be unveiled at an exclusive street festival - the Namma Bengaluru Habba, at the Vidhana Soudha.
Namma Bengaluru a city of vibrant cultures , colours and flavours. A city with timeless beauty, majestic architecture,
heritage, lush parks this where the old and new coexist. As the world’s most dynamic city, today Bengaluru is constantly
on the move. While staying true to itself, the city inspires its people to aspire and reach for their goals. Indeed a city that
lets you be you. Celebrate the city that celebrates you.
It is all these that the Department of Tourism will capitalise on, in its push to take Bengaluru forward, and to reiterate its
commitment to the city and its unique culture and heritage, and showcase the art, music, tradition, technology, and food
that has made Bengaluru the fastest growing metropolis in the country.
Shri Priyank Kharge, the Minister for Tourism and IT/BT, explained the reasons for the identity. He said, “Like ‘I love New
York’, New York is written in a particular way; London, Amsterdam, Lyon, Melbourne is written in a particular way. How
do I start identifying Bengaluru outside?”
“Today, after months of brainstorming and planning, we have the perfect identity that captures the spirit of the city and
its people. What’s more, the design comes from the very people of the city. It is a crowd-sourced, creative identity that
truly represents the deep connection the city and its residents have. "The logo will help to leverage Bengaluru's identity
better and create a brand value that could, in turn, stimulate the economy and create jobs by attracting more footfall,"
he added.
The final logo was one of many submitted by citizens, designers, and others in an open, transparent contest. The
department of tourism and the city’s Tourism Advisory Committee gave extensive briefing and advice, and let the
creative speak for itself.
Shri Kharge, talking about the design, said, “Brand Bengaluru is not just in its coffee shops and shopping malls. It is in
every citizen and in every street and locality. The new logo will bring that forward, provide an opportunity for citizens -
both the old and the new, the newcomer and the long timer, to really get in touch with the city and its ethos.”
Now, the logo will be unveiled through a unique street festival - the Namma Bengaluru Habba.
To be inaugurated by the honourable Chief Minister of Karnataka, Shri Siddaramiah, the festival will be held against the
magnificent backdrop of the Vidhana Soudha - the symbol of Karnataka’s stable and people-centric government.
Namma Bengaluru Habba will be a traffic-free, safe and secure public space for the citizens. Performances, artists, arts,
handicrafts, organic markets, and more will create the lively setting against which each visitor will reaffirm their faith and
belief in the city, and join others in creating a sustainable, dynamic future.
72. Movie screenings, live performances, storytelling sessions, interactive workshops and more will bring together family
and friends, and help turn strangers into friends.
The festival will also feature special performances to showcase the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Karnataka, and to
take visitors back - if only for a short while - into the city’s past.
And for those looking for great bargains, there will be over 20 stalls and a flea market. The highlight of the stalls will be
organic and eco-friendly products including terracotta jewellery, natural soaps, organic grains including millets and millet
based products, jute, plants, and handicrafts. Food trucks and stalls will cater to every craving.
A great festival, and an all new identity - just what is needed for Bengaluru - the most vibrant metropolis in the country.
