3. INTRODUCTION
Agricultural holdings are getting
Fragmented and water resources are
becoming scarce. Adoption of a
resource-efficient, Technology based
climate-smart agriculture can enhance
agricultural productivity and
Sustainability
Greater emphasis should be
given to allied sectors with a
major focus on dairy, poultry,
fisheries and rearing of small
ruminants.
Rationalisation of food
subsidy and greater use
of technology in food
managementwill
ensure food security.
For the safe and secure future, the
agriculture landscape has to undergo the
shift from ‘green revolution’ led
productivity to ‘green methods’ led
sustainability in agriculture.
With decline in the size of Landholdings in
agriculture, India has to focus on resource
efficiency in smallholder farming to meet
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
targets and also to attainsustainability in
agriculture
4. OVERVIEW OF AGRICULTURE AND ALLIED SECTOR
Cyclicalmovement in agriculture sector
is witnessed relating to it’s growth
Gross value added (GVA) in agriculture
improved from a negative 0.2 percent in 2014-
2015 to 6.3 per cent in 2016-17 and then again
fallen to 2.9 per cent in 2018-19
The fisheries sector has shown a rapid growth
from 4.9 per cent in 2012-13 to 11.9 per cent
in 2017-18
5. PATTERN OF AGRICULTURAL LANDHOLDINGS IN INDIA
Land put to agriculturaluse has
increased from 13.8 cr in 2010-11 to
14.6 cr in 2015-16 showing an increase
of 5.3℅
Share of marginal holdingsof
operational landhad shown a
constant growth of around 6℅
from 2000-01 to 2015-16
whereas large holdingshad
decreased from 37.2℅ to 20%
during the period.
6. ROLE OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICES
Agricultural extension is essential to
enhance food security, improve rural
livelihood and improve farming practices
Technical advices were extended through
various media to farmers who found them
to be very beneficial which reflects the
significance of extension services in
agriculture
There has been an increasing trend in the
expenditure on agricultural research and
education as a percentage of total agricultural
GVA, except in 2017-18 where a downtrend
could be witnessed
7. AGRICULTURAL CREDIT
From the adjoining figure, we
could observe that the
distribution of agricultural
credit is low in northern
eastern states and Hilly areas
The access to
timely credit or
finance is a critical
determinantof
profitabilityof
agriculture
If credit is not availableto
purchase seeds at the time of
sowing, or if lack of credit delays
the administeringof fertilizers, it
can severely impact agricultural
productivity
8. ALLIED SECTORS: ANIMAL HUSBANDRY,
DAIRYING AND FISHERIES
India support 16.1 per cent of the
world’s goat population and 6.4 per
cent of it’s sheep
India ranks first in the milk production,
accounting for 20 per cent of world
production with a constant increase of
about 4.5 per cent annually
There is inter-state variability in milk
production while the All India per capita
availability of milk is 375 grams per day, it
varies between 71 grams per day in Assam to
1120 grams per day in Punjab
9. FOOD SECURITY AND FOOD MANAGEMENT IN INDIA
Specific measures taken by Government with respect
to food security
Announcing MSP
and CIP
Open market
sale of wheat
and rice to
check inflation
Procurement of
food grains through
FCI and maintaining
buffer stocks
Timely availability and affordability of food are
critical for a developing country like India
India’s food security score is 50.1 out of 100 which
ranks India 76 out of 113 countries as per the Global
Food Security Index, 2018 (GFSI) ranking
This reflects the need for Indiato further improve the
management of food supply in variousaspects
Extending Minimum Support Price (MSP) for
more crops and revising Central Issues Price (CIP)
of wheat and rice would be beneficial to farmers
and the weaker sections of society as well
Ensuring supply of good quality food grain under public
Distribution System (PDS) is essential. Computerizing
Targeted PDS to resolve complaints on real time basis
would be helpful in this regard
