Introduction
This project is prepared to study the country's leading media conglomerate i.e. Star India.
Media and Entertainment Industry:
The media and entertainment industry in India consists of many different segments under its folds
such as television, print, and films. It also includes smaller segments like radio, music, OOH, animation,
gaming and visual effects (VFX) and Internet advertising. Entertainment industry in India has registered
an explosive growth in last two decades making it one of the fastest growing industries in India. From a
single state owned channel, Doordarshan in the 1990s there are more than 400 active channels in the
country. The Indian Media & Entertainment Industry grew from US$12.9 billion in 2009 to US$14.4
billion in 2010, a growth of 11 per cent, according to a report by the Federation of Indian Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and research firm KPMG. The sector is projected to grow at a CAGR of
14 percent to reach US$28.1 billion by 2015.
Television industry:
Television is one of the major mass media of India and is a huge industry and has thousands of programs
in all the states of India. Today India boasts of being the third largest television market in the world.
Television first came to India in the form of Doordarshan (DD) on Sept 15, 1959. Doordarshan is the
National Television Network of India and also one of the largest broadcasting organisations in the world.
Apart from the state run Doordarshan, there are six DTH players with 54.52 million DTH users in India
with the present prediction; it is likely to overtake the US in terms of the largest DTH market in the
world.
A) Corporate History ofStar India:
1991: Star TV was a joint venture between Hutchison Whampoa and Li Ka-Shing and was established to
launch such a service. Li Ka-Shing's son, Richard, was CEO. It was launched in 1991.
1992: Star India included Star Plus (then an English-language entertainment channel), Prime Sports (later
became Star Sports), MTV and Nickelodeon (through a tie up with Viacom), Star Movies and Zee TV
(belonging to Subhash Chandra). Star TV was beamed out of Asiasat satellite.
1993: Rupert Murdoch bought a 64 percent stake in Star TV for $525 million. Star was originally
broadcasting content from Rupert Murdoch's Fox Broadcasting and thus a synergy was envisioned. News
Corporation purchased 63.6% of STAR for over $500 million, followed by the purchase of the remaining
36.4% on 1 January 1993.
1995: Zee TV and Star signed an agreement to promote each other's content on their respective networks.
Thus ads for Star programs began to appear on Zee and vice versa. An agreement with Subhash
Chandra prohibited Star from creating Hindi-language programming, so Star relied mainly on English-
language imported programming. Star was third in Indian market share (3%) behind Zee TV (12%) and
Sony (11%). This agreement was however short-lived as Star's English-language entertainment channel
Star Plus started broadcasting Hindi content.
1997: Star Plus became a 100% Hindi-language entertainment channel and Star TV launched Star World
a separate channelthat broadcast content formerly shown by Star Plus.
1997-1999:Star had losses of nearly US$500 million.
6. 6
1999-2007:Consequently, Murdoch revamped Star management; programming chief Sameer
Nair decided to start creating Hindi-language programming to target "mass instead of class." Peter
Mukerjea was Chief Executive Officer of STAR India from 1999 to 2007.
2009: STAR Broadcasting Corporation revealed a restructure to its Asian broadcast businesses into three
units – STAR India, STAR, and Fox International Channels Asia. STAR India also manages News
Corporation's interests in seven ventures including DTH operator Tata Sky; cable system Hathway,
channel distributor Media Pro Enterprise, south Indian broadcast business of STAR Vijay, the film
producer and distributor Fox Star Studios India and STAR CJ Alive Home Shopping.
2011: STAR India entered into High Definition broadcasting on 15 April 2011 with the launch of the HD
versions of its channels, including Star Plus HD, Star Movies HD,Star World HD,Star Gold HD and
National Geographic Channel India HD.
B) Mission: The objective for the channel’s team is to work towards leadership in each of these slots. The
channel’s decision not to prolong storylines beyond their natural course, even in case of high-delivering
shows like ‘Bidaai’, and quickly wind down shows that delivered below par, helped it regain its
leadership slot.
Star is creating an ambitious vision for sports in India with an aim to inspire a new generation of fans
to watch and play the best of local and world sports in India, thereby reflecting the spirit and lifestyle of
the nation's youth.
C) Vision: "We want to create a brand that breaks rules, a brand that look, speak, sounds and behave like
no other in TV space."
D) Corporate objectives:
1) To reach million of household across the countries.
2) To improve story and content quality, so that consumption of content will increase.
3) To generate higher TRP's for the channel.
4) Objective behind hotstar was that, lot of were audiences were consuming our content on
Other channel, we were unhappy with inability to control their viewing experience. So,
We came with hotstar.
E) Corporate strategy:
1) To put the customer first.
2) Make every employee a brand ambassador.
3) Be sincere on social media.
4) Formalize marketing processes and measure results.
5) Focus on your brand, not your vendors’
