1. Mobile Paperboard Knife Policy
The purpose of this policy is to minimize the risk of injury due to the use of open blade cutting
tools currently used at Caraustar Mobile. While alternative knives may at first slow down the
operation, that delay is considered acceptable because we will be reducing risk of injury. As we
become more proficient with the use of alternative knives, that delay should become small.
Scope:
This policy will be implemented in a stepwise manor meaning the first version will still allow
open blade knives to be used for specific tasks as outlined below. However, the ultimate goal is
to completely replace traditional cutting tools, such as razor knives, with safer alternatives. In
general, if a open blade knife is to be used, it will be “One Knive, One Man, One Task”.
Policy:
1. Only those cutting tools supplied by Mobile Paperboard are allowed to be used for work.
Personal pocket knives and other cutting tools not supplied by the company may not be used for
job related tasks.
2. Razor knives are NOT allowed to be carried on person (ie pocket, on belt clip, etc…)
3. Raxor knives, where allowed, will have designated storage locations (see list below)>
4. Whenever a razor knife is used, cut resistant gloves are REQUIRED ON BOTH HANDS
except for cutting tail at Calander stacks
5. Whenever slabbing, cut resistant sleeves MUST BE WORN on the arm against paper.
If a task is not identified in the list below, a traditional rezor knife may NOT be used. Only the
tasks listed directly below are acceptable use of razor knife.
Permitted use of traditional razor knives
Cutting Tail at last dryer
Cutting Tail to Pope Reel
Removing machine clothing
Cutting paper off wrapped dryer

2. Attached on second tab, is a page that provides guidance to the alternative knives that have
been trialed for specific tasks. Other alternative knives may also work. If any employee
identifies a better tool that may work better, that tool should be presented to, and reviewed, b;y
the area manager and safety team to determine if it is an acceptable alternative.
