32.  Examples of EU-funded projects:
 Health:
 Beating immune reactions for healthier heart valve implants:
 Immune reactions reduce the lifespan of animal-derived heart valves implanted in cardiac
patients. An EU-funded project discovered how to overcome this limitation, to produce
valves with improved biocompatibility and novel immunological strategies that will benefit
younger patients in particular.
 Combined vaccine strategy targets both hepatitis C virus and HIV:
 An EU-funded project developed a simple, affordable and effective vaccine strategy to
prevent the incidence of both hepatitis C virus and HIV-1. This could significantly increase
the life expectancy of people receiving antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1.

 Security:
 Super-sensitive scanners search crowds in real time:
 Long, inefficient queues at airports and security checkpoints could soon be a thing of the
past, thanks to EU-funded researchers who have designed slimline, hyper-sensitive
scanners that survey crowds in real time.
 State-of-the-art radar to keep coastal borders safe:
 An EU-funded project has developed a high-tech detection system to combat coastal
crime such as smuggling, human trafficking, drug running, spying and terrorism. The
software should keep maritime border security up to date and improve defence across
Europe and further afield.

34.  Examples of EU-funded projects:
 Agriculture:
 Uncorking the flavour and character of local wines:
 An EU-funded project has given European vintners the tools to make premium wines with
local character. Researchers have pinpointed wild yeasts and bacteria that promise to
serve up additional choice and flavour for consumers.
 Boosting wheat yields in the face of climate change:
 Rising temperatures due to climate change are reducing crop yields, which compromises
food security. EU-funded researchers are working to make wheat less susceptible to heat
so that it remains a safe and reliable food source.

 Space exploration:
 Three habitable Earth-like planets observed:
 A team of researchers, led by ERC grantee Michaël Gillon, has discovered three
potentially habitable planets that orbit an ultra-cool dwarf star, no further away than 40
light years from Earth.

Horizon Europe
is the Commission proposal for a € 100 billion research and
innovation funding programme for seven years (2021-2027)
to strengthen the EU's scientific and technological bases
to boost Europe's innovation capacity, competitiveness
and jobs
to deliver on citizens' priorities and sustain our socio-economic model and values
Additional € 4.1 billion are proposed to be allocated for
defence research, in a separate proposal for a European
Defence Fund

 Communication on Artificial Intelligence (4/2018):
 Boost the EU's technological and industrial capacity and AI uptake
across the economy, both by the private and public sectors. This
includes investments in research and innovation and better access to
data.
 Prepare for socio-economic changes brought about by AI by
encouraging the modernisation of education and training systems,
nurturing talent, anticipating changes in the labour market, supporting
labour market transitions and adaptation of social protection systems.
 Ensure an appropriate ethical and legal framework, based on the
Union's values and in line with the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the
EU. This includes forthcoming guidance on existing product liability
rules, a detailed analysis of emerging challenges, and cooperation with
stakeholders, through a European AI Alliance, for the development of AI
ethics guidelines.
