European Institute of Innovation & Technology in short
Innovation is the key to growth, competitiveness
and social well-being in the 21st century. The
capacity of a society to innovate is crucial in an ever
more knowledge-intensive economy.
The European Institute of Innovation and
Technology (EIT) aims to enhance Europe’s ability to
innovate, which translates into adapting quickly to
the fast pace of development, being one step ahead
in providing solutions to rapidly emerging societal
problems and developing products that meet the
demands and desires of consumers.
The EIT is a body of the European Union
based in Budapest, Hungary, in 2008.

EIT’s mission
Europe faces a significant
innovation challenge -
Despite an excellence
research base, dynamic
companies and creative
talent, good ideas are too
rarely turned into new
products or services.
Europe needs a change of
mind-set towards the
promotion of a more
innovative and
entrepreneurial culture.
The EIT mission is to foster
entrepreneurship and
innovation across Europe.
5. 5
Funding Model
No research funding
The EIT Funding model aims
to:
Boost innovation
Commercialize R&D results
into products, services and
processes
Stimulate intra- and
entrepreneurship through
education and life-long
learning
Promote mobility and cross-
fertilization integrating the
Knowledge Triangle

EIT RawMaterials
• Committed to strengthen technology development, innovation capacity,
competiveness and sustainable growth in Europe.
• Aims to boost innovation by introducing new solutions, products and services for
sustainable exploration, extraction, mineral processing, recycling, material
management and substitution.
• Expected to turn investment into tangible economic and social impact, including
business opportunities, risk taking and entrepreneurial people contributing to
sustainable economic growth. This, in turn, will boost the competitiveness of the
European Raw aterials sector and generate new, high quality jobs.
• Focuses on commercialization of new products and services on a global market,
business creation and SME growth.

Goals
To boost the competitiveness, growth, and attractiveness of the European
Raw Materials sector through radical innovation and entrepreneurship.
• To create and develop “game changing” businesses
• To boost the existing Raw Materials sector through the market introduction
of new materials, investment in new production and processing units,
system integration and the setting up of new partnerships
• To achieve a “paradigm shift” in raw materials education by introducing
entrepreneurship, supporting the effective transformation of ideas into
businesses
9. 9
Focus Markets
EIT RawMaterials gives
specific attention to four
focus markets with a dual

• Secure the needs of
Raw Material and to
provide commercial
products and services to
these material intensive
markets.
• Introduce solutions
from the focus markets
to the Raw Materials
sector.
10. 10
EIT RawMaterials Knowledge and Innovation Themes
Aim to integrate the Knowledge Triangle and to facilitate a systemic
approach to the Raw Materials value-chain.
Exploration and raw materials resource assessment
Mining in challenging environments
Increased resource efficiency in mineral and metallurgical processes
Recycling and materials chain optimisation for End-of-Life products
Substitution of critical and toxic materials in products and for optimised
performance
Design of products and services for the circular economy

Northern CLC Mission (1/2)
Establish an innovation hub of international excellence for Europe within
Primary resources in Luleå including:
• Gateway addressing Arctic resources, green mining and CSR in the Arctic
area, an important part of the EIP RM SIP.
• Gateway addressing multidisciplinary perspectives in exploration, mining
and new technologies, in Latin America.
• Establish a pre-incubator in Primary resources with competences and
resources committed to the mining, mineral and metal producing industry.
• Create a Pan-European network of pre-incubators providing early access to
new technology, entrepreneurial skills and networks.
• Build large scaled pilots through-out the value-chain implementing EIP SIP.
• Support SME willing and able to grow internationally.
