In following the various meetings inside the Noi Free Software Lab Community, Gruppo FOS and Truckscreenia decided to implement a new and challenging idea: create a smart tile low powered that presents information continuously without any energy power line, and can be sticked everywhere. Desired result was to create a display with innovative technology and connect it to the Open Data Hub in order to retrieve automatically and show the relevant information. This required to transfer the knowledge acquired in the DOOH (Digital Out Of Home) ecosystem into an indoor signage system on one side, and create an infrastructure to manage data transfer on the other. Accordingly, the devices have been designed to be connected to the infrastructure in order to constantly exchange information. This allows for the right image to show and a real time monitoring of the display. Moreover, thanks to the connectivity, it is possible to run maintenance and software upgrades remotely. The hardware part of the project exploits the e-paper technology that is based on electrophoretic ink and grants several advantages, like a wide view angle, low power consumption and no light pollution. Other than that, thanks to its uniqueness, an e-paper screen is an “always on” display: it can still show the image even if completely turned off, with no energy consumption at all. In fact, one of the main features of such a technology is that it requires power only in case of changing image, while no power is needed when an image is shown. This approach led to the development of two different devices, according to the particular needs and scenarios: the totem, based on a 31.2” e-paper display, for hall or conference room, and the tag, with a 7,8” e-paper display, ideal as door or office label. For controlling the devices in multi managed mode, a new Management Device Manager that works in Cloud infrastructure was created. Truckscreenia is based at the NOI Techpark in Bolzano and is a manufacturing and software company with a focus on data and AI. The mission is to make mobility smarter, more sustainable and better integrated with other industries.
