Introduction:
Reports of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) are frequent on the Big Island of Hawaii. Locals believe the active volcano Kilauea acts as a beacon in
the center of the cool Pacific Ocean attracting the aliens to the tropical island chain. From among the believers in UFOs, a subset of individuals
report being abducted by the Aliens, and many of those report having Alien transmitters implanted into their heads during their confinement on the
Alien Mother Ship. The patients discussed in this presentation were referred to the Honolulu Neuroscience Clinic for complaints of chronic, severe
headaches by their primary physicians. None of the referring physicians knew that their patients believed they had been abducted by Aliens. A full
evaluation including Brain MRI and DenseArray (128 channel) EEG was performed. This presentation discusses the Densearray
electroencephalographic abnormalities in those patients who report being abducted by Aliens, both with and without implanted alien transmitters, as
identified using 128 channel DenseArray Electroencephalography (DEEG). Electrocortical abnormalities associated with reported Alien abductions and
Alien transmitter implants have not previously been reported.
Methods:
The DEEGs of 3 patients with complaints of Alien abduction with implanted transmitters are reported in this abstract. The DEEGs of additional
patients are under analysis for presentation at the conference. DEEG was acquired at a sampling rate of 500Hz for at least 60 minutes in a wake and
sleep state protocol using the EGI, 128 channel system 300 and evaluated using NetStation Geosource software. Each patient was challenged with
strobe, hyperventilation, and with a mathematics task (Counting backwards from 100 by 7 and doubling: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.). Frequency bands
reviewed were Delta (0.1 to 3.5 Hz), Theta (3.57.5 Hz), Alpha (7.512.5 Hz), Beta 12.5 – 20 Hz), Upper Beta (Upper Beta (20 to 30 Hz), and
Gamma (30 to 40 Hz). Slow waves (> 0.5 seconds), sharp waves (> 0.2 seconds), spikes, or sharpslow wave bursts (> 0.2 seconds) are reported
as occurring by region or occurring diffusely, by hemisphere, and during wake or during both wake and sleep.
Results:
DEEG analysis revealed abnormalities in all patients described. The abnormalities were multifocal and seen during both wake and sleep. All patients
showed sharp wave discharges, emerging from the parietal regions, left parietal greater than right parietal. Parietal region abnormalities also
included spikes and sharpslow wave bursts in addition to the sharp waves. (see figures). Initial analyses are presented here.
Conclusions:
DEEG identified multifocal abnormalities in all patients reporting Alien abduction. The presence of the abnormalities emerging from the parietal
regions suggests that a disorder of perception may be a feature in common among Alien abductees and may subserve a distortion of visualauditory
integration into consciousness.
Analyses from additional patients will be included at conference. Commonalities in the patients' description of their abduction will be discussed from
the behavioral neurology perspective. Analyses are under way to characterize the changes seen after therapies have been initiated to remove the
perceived implanted alien transmitters. Confounding factors, including concussion, comorbid illnesses, and medication effects, are under
assessment. 128channel Dense Array EEG is a sensitive tool in identifying electrocortical abnormalities associated with reported Alien abductions.
