Proof the College Football Playoff Worked
For years college football fans have been clamoring for a playoff to decide the national
champion, mainly because everyone was sick of the computers controlling everything
and only giving two teams a shot.
Well, this season, the first ever College Football Playoff was put into place and it could
not have been a bigger success.
Some would say it was a success because no SEC teams got into the national title game,
for the first time since 2005. I would say this is not (the only) reason the Playoff was a
successful.
Ohio State and Oregon will meet in the national championship game on January 12th, but
this matchup was literally impossible any other year.
Any other year, the undefeated team, Florida State, and the one-loss SEC team, Alabama,
would have met in the championship and rightfully so, but now, each of those teams will
have to prove their legitimacy by beating another really good, deserving team.
As I said, no one would argue that the championship should be Alabama vs. Florida State
any other year, but that is not to say that Oregon and Ohio State are not very good and
deserving teams.
I know what some of you are thinking, what about TCU and Baylor?
While I am of the mind that TCU did deserve the spot, I think we can just look at Ohio
State as the representative of the three teams. I am not here to argue who should have
gotten that 4th spot, but Ohio State got the nod and they had just as much of an argument
as TCU and Baylor.
Now, any other year, Oregon and Ohio State would have met in the Rose Bowl game as
representatives of the Pac 12 and Big 10 and played for nothing more than a game for
pride and a slap on the back for the departing seniors, but now, those same teams got a
shot to prove they belonged in the mix and took full advantage of it, both winning their
respective games.
The entire point of the Playoff was to give more teams a shot at the national title; maybe
not all of the deserving teams (TCU, Baylor) but more (Oregon, Ohio State); based off of
those facts, the Playoff has clearly fulfilled its duty and been a rousing success in its
debut.
College Football has as much steam now as it ever has had in its history, thanks to the
College Football Playoff.
The only question is, when are we expanding to eight?
