In mid1963, Mandy Rice-Davieswasthe fantasygirl notjustof middle agedandoldermenbutof
millionsof teenage schoolboyswhoweretitillatedbyherbubbly,irreverentanddevil-may-care
attitude andundoubtedglamour,shapelybodyintight-fittingclothes,massesof blondhairand,
perhapsabove all,the scandal surroundingher.
I rememberwhenaphotographshowingtothe bestadvantage hernatural attributesappearedin
the morningnewspaperthatmymotheralmostsnortedwithdisgustsayingsomethinglike, “Whata
hussy”and“I can’t see whatrespectablemen would see in her.”
I was 14, she was19 and, across the top of the newspaper,myfathergave me a verydeliberate
wink.Itwas an instantfatherandson bondingmomentandthe onlysex education Ieverhad.
Then,suddenlyinDecember,she wasdeadat70 aftera brief battle withcancer.
She was a bitplayerinwhat became knownasthe Profumoscandal whichrockedthe British
Conservative Government. Mandycame froma modestbackgroundandshe lefthome at15 seeking
the excitementof Londonandthe companyof wealthier,olderandoftenaristocraticmennotto
mentionrichcrooks.
In 1960, she metChristine Keeler–alsoa highclassprostitute –and one biographerwhoknew her
well wrote afterherdeath, “They shared flatstogetherand setout to havea good time. They liked
being taken by men to smartrestaurantsand glitzy clubs,they liked a giggle, they liked sex and they
didn’tthinkmuch of straight-laced morality.Mandy in particulardidn’t seewhy men should haveall
of the sexualchoices and notwomen.Shelaughed atthe way men were admired forhaving sexual
experiencesbutwomen scorned forit.”
She was swinginginLondonbefore the SwingingSixtieshadevenbegun.
In 1963, the well-connectedosteopathStephenWardwaschargedwithlivingoff immoral earnings.
He knewbothgirlsandhad introducedKeelertothe War MinisterJohnProfumoatthe Cliveden
estate of ViscountAstor. JohnProfumo,aseniorandveryrespectablymarriedConservativeParty
figure,begananaffairwithKeelerwhoalsohappenedtobe sleepingwithaSovietdiplomatandspy.
It was a veryfree andeasyatmosphere amongwhatbecame knownasthe ClivedenSetwithgirls
like Rice-DaviesandKeeleronhandto provide verydiscreet“services”tothe middle agedmale
guests.
It was duringWard’strial that Lord Astor’scounsel pointedouttoRice-DaviesthatHisLordshipnot
onlydeniedhavingmether,he deniedhavinganaffairwithher.She replied, “Hewould,wouldn’t
he?” It broke the court up and Astor,whodieda brokenmanthree yearslater,wasdamnedinthe
publiceye.
Whenthe matter arose inParliament,Profumoflatlydenied knowinganythingaboutanythingand
whenthe truthemerged,he resignedindisgrace.
The writerLudovicKennedyleftamemorable first-handaccountof Mandyin full flow inthe witness
box. “Astrideher golden head sat a little rose-petalled hat,such asdebutanteswearatgarden
parties... Her simple, grey sleeveless dressaccentuated the impression of modesty ...until one looked
at it closely. Then onesawthatthe slit down thefrontwasonly held togetherby a loose knot– when
she walked,onecould see quite a long way up her leg.”
She was mature beyondheryearsandmilkedeveryopportunitytogainpublicity.She made records,
wrote booksbecame anactress albeitwithmixedandmodestsuccessandhadthree husbands.
Alongthe wayshe also became averysuccessful businesswomanandmade afortune inrestaurants
and nightclubs(all called “Mandy’s”)withhersecondhusbandinIsrael.
Her life afterthe Profumoscandal was,accordingtoher, “a slow slide into respectability”
Mandy’s thirdand last husbandKenForemanwasthe wealthyCEOof an Americanwaste
managementgroupandVice-Presidentof herhusband’scompanywasDenisThatcher,husbandof
BritishPrime MinisterMargaretThatcher.Onher deskinherBelgravia London home wasa framed
picture of her andher husbandwith the ThatchersonholidaytogetherinFlorida,USA.
One biographerrecorded, “On thefirstoccasion when the Thatchersand theForemanshad a
discreet dinnertogether, Mrs. T wasunwontedly silent.Shefixed hereyes on Mandy,grazed intently
at her,trying to pierce the secretsof her very differentbrand of femininity and both intrigued and
guarded in the company of a sixties icon.”
It tooka lotto keepMrs Thatcherquiet.Mandysure wasone hell of a dame.
