Protecting Ghana Telecom with Verid+ iCLASS
Project Brief
Client Profile & Business Challenge
bc
CaseStudy
Ghana Telecom is the number one provider of telecommunications to the
country of Ghana. As the main provider for telecoms and IT it is imperative
that the telecommunications infrastucture remains intact and protected from
any form of attack. The physical infrastructure including telephone
exchanges, equipment rooms and repeater stations must remain free from
theft or vandalism if they are to ensure continued economic growth and
development.
Ghana Telecom were looking for a solution to secure their telephone
exchanges, equipment rooms and repeater stations – thereby ensuring
unauthorised access is prevented, and the telecommunications infrastructure
of the country remains intact and safe.
Ghana Telecom provide the country’s telecommunication infrastructure which
serves as the backbone for economic growth and development.
Ghana Telecom is one of the largest employers in the country employing
close to 4,000 Ghanaians. The company’s operations are a source of
employment for communication centre operators and agents who supply the
Ghana Telecom payphone, recharge and top-up cards.
Ghana Telecom's telecommunication infrastructure helps the public make use
of advanced information technology applications for long distance learning,
e-banking and e-business transactions. The availability of a secure
telecommunication infrastructure serves as an essential ingredient in
supporting the country’s economic growth.
Remote Building Protection
The Verid+ biometric fingerprint reader was used in conjunction with HID’s iCLASS smartcards to
secure telephone exchanges, equipment rooms and repeater stations – thereby ensuring
unauthorised access is prevented.
The combination of TSSI’s Verid+ fingerprint technology and HID’s iCLASS cards allows 2 fingerprint
templates and a PIN to be stored on the smallest, lowest cost iCLASS card. The template-on-card
feature means that the user’s fingerprint data travels with him or her on the card. Hence, no
networking is needed to transfer the correct templates to each site. This reduces costs and
administration time, providing a simple, secure and robust system.
Roy Thomson, TSSI’s Biometric Business Manager commented: ”Template-on Card has proved to be
an effective solution where biometric access is needed across disparate sites. TSSI’s small fingerprint
templates (52 bytes) are ideal for this type of Smartcard based application.”
