King David prepared extensively for the building of God's temple, giving generously of his own wealth in gold, silver, and precious stones. When the people saw David's willing offering, they rejoiced and offered greatly themselves. David blessed God, acknowledging that all things come from Him and they are but strangers on earth. Their gifts were only possible because of God's provision and ownership of all things.
King David's Generous Giving to Build God's Temple
1. 1 Chronicles 29: 1-5, 9-16
King James Version
1 Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God
hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but
for the Lord God.
2 Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made
of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of
iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistering stones, and of
divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.
3 Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper
good, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I
have prepared for the holy house.
4 Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined
silver, to overlay the walls of the houses withal:
5 The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be
made by the hands of artificers. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto
the Lord?
2. 9 Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they
offered willingly to the Lord: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.
10 Wherefore David blessed the Lord before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed
thou, Lord God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
11 Thine, O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the
for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and
exalted as head above all.
12 Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is
and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all.
13 Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after
sort? for all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
15 For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on
earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.
16 O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine
name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own
4. Introduction:
In giving we take relationships, and in
relationships we take the attitude of serving one
another.
It is in giving inside the heart of David that made
him a man after God’s heart.
According to Cambridge Dictionary, ”Give” means to
offer something to someone, or to provide someone
with something
5 Principles of giving unto the LORD
5. I – Giving unto the LORD involves a BURDEN
v.1 Furthermore David the king said unto all the
congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath
chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great:
for the palace is not for man, but for the Lord God.
We must be sensitive to the LORD’s burden
6. II – Giving unto the LORD requires PREPARATION
V 2. Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God
the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of
silver, and the brass for things of brass, the iron for things of iron,
and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set,
glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious
stones, and marble stones in abundance.
Giving is a privilege, it needs a readiness of the heart and
preparation.
1 Thessalonians 2: 8 So being affectionately desirous of you, we
were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God
only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.
7. III – Giving unto the LORD is an act of WORSHIP
V.3 Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God,
I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, which I have
given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared
for the holy house.
2 Samuel 24:24 – David not give something that did not cost him
something. He moved sacrificially!
Our giving reflects our worship and our worship leads to our giving.
8. IV- Giving unto the LORD follows SELF-CONSECRATION
V.5 The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and
for all manner of work to be made by the hands of artificers. And who
then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the Lord?
2 Corinthians 8:2 – How that in a great trial of affliction the
abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the
riches of their liberality. (Giving overflows out of generosity)
2 Corinthians 8:5 - And this they did, not as we hoped, but first
gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.
If we live a consecrated life, it means we are touched by the Gospel, so
we live life in giving....
9. V- Giving unto the LORD as STEWARD, not as
owner.
14 But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able to
offer so willingly after this sort? for all things come of thee, and of
thine own have we given thee.
If we give as a steward, we can give liberally knowing that it is not
yours, so we can give it back to God wholeheartedly.
10. Conclusion:
Giving unto the LORD is building up relationship with HIM
2 Cor. 8:9 -For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor,
that ye through his poverty might be rich.
GOD values our integrity and character.
