Medical professionals rely on positron emission
tomography (PET) scans to help identify and treat a
variety of conditions. The technology, most often used in
the fields of oncology, neurology, and cardiology, works by
detecting the radiation from radioactive tracers, or
radiotracers, which are radioactive atoms attached to
chemical substances.

3. PET SCANS
 For many PET scans, the chemical substance used is
fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). Once FDG is in the body,
physicians can track the areas in which it
accumulates. These buildups suggest an abnormality
or other functionality problem, since certain medical
conditions, such as cancer, use more glucose than
normal.
Because PET scans are performed on an outpatient
basis, they do not require overnight stays. When
patients come to the clinic, they are given the
radiotracer, typically through an IV. Within 30 to 60
minutes, the radiotracer has had enough time to
move through the body, and the PET scan is
conducted.
