2. Why they fight
• When other people have food and the
village doesn’t, the people tried to
steal the food. If the other village
saw them they would get their food
back and try to catch them.
• Normally tribes fight for utu
(revenge).
3. The Haka
• There were two versions of the Haka. One Haka is
with no weapons and the other Haka is with
weapons.
• There was a Haka of song and joy.
• The Haka may also be used to tell of great feasts.
4. How long they fight and
who they fight
• One New Zealand war started in
1860 and lasted 12 days.
• Maori warfare was a very big
part of early Maori life and
tribes. The tribes fought each
other.
5. Weapons
• Weapons were used for face to face combat
fighting.
• Tribes use lots of different types of
weapons such as wooden daggers named tete
and the taumarunui and a spear called
apouwnenua.
• The weapons that Maori's used included
clubs. They were made out of wood, stone
and bone.
