2. What is Emotional Quotient?
• is the capability of individuals to recognize their
own emotions and those of others, discern between
different feelings and label them appropriately, use
emotional information to guide thinking and behavior,
and manage and/or adjust emotions to adapt to
environments or achieve one's goal(s).
3. According to Bhagavad Gita…
• The one who is able to
control the emotions
in all the situations is
called balanced.
• दुुःखेष्वनुद्ववग्नमन ुः सुखेषु
ववगतस्पृहुः।
वीतर गभयक्रोधुः
स्स्ितधीमुुननरुच्यते।।2.56।।
4. Elinor, Marianne and Willoughby
• Elinor represents sense and Marianne
represents sensibility.
• Making mistakes and taking false decisions
in emotional turmoil is generally led by the
catastrophes like breakdown.
• Both, sense and sensibility are
supplementary to one another.
• Willoughby represents today’s materialistic
culture.
5. How the Novel Can be Read Today?
• Can be read like multifaceted diamond.
• Marianne Dashwood – as an example of
reluctance and impatience.
• Novel as a lesson to youth. One should be
careful in decision making.
6. Complexity in Life
• John Willoughby can be
looked at the representation
of today’s material life.
• Materialistic life makes
people monotonous and
ignorant by emotional
grounds.
• People join the rat race
of wealth and power.
• Shallowness in
emotional intelligence.
7. Three ‘E’s
• Education – It is required to develop critical
thinking. This helps in making choices and
decisions.
• Environment – It helps us to sustain in
various hardships, such as Elinor’s company
gives motivation to Marianne and vice versa
• Experience – Marianne after hurdles and
heartbreak, gets to know that both sense
and sensibility should be balanced.
8. Balance is necessary
Love at first site is the cause of Marianne’s heart break.
John Willoughby takes benefit of her innocence and
plays with her emotions. Though he never loved
Marianne truly.
Elinor’s delay in revealing the feelings for Edward can
be seen as balanced attitude towards emotional
matters.
It is all about practicing empathy.
9. …Then story would be twisted
Marianne would have saved from the
heartbreak if she could have cultivated
critical thinking about Willoughby.
John Willoughby would have found
Marianne’s love worthier than wealth.
Edward Ferrars would have revealed
his hidden relationship with Lucy Steele
and could keep transparency with
Elinor’s friendship.
