• Only few items go in the garbage. Before placing items in the garbage, check to see if they can
be recycled or taken to a drop-off depot.

• Dispose of all the following in the garbage in plastic garbage bags:
• Personal hygiene products
• Used tissues
• Cleaning cloths
• Face masks
• Gloves
• Sanitary wipes, even those listed as flushable or compostable
• All similar items
• Securely tie garbage bags shut and set out in your bin in your regular collection area
• If you’re sick or caring for someone who is sick:
• Double bag all personal waste in plastic garbage bags
• Securely tie all bags shut and dispose of as regular residential garbage
10. Used CookedOil
• Small amounts of cooking oil can be wiped up with a paper towel and put in the
food scraps bin.
• Large amounts can be dropped off the Recycle Depot of your city.
• Never dump grease and oil down the drain as this cause sewer line blockages.

11. Container Recycle Deposit
• Deposits are charged when products are purchased in British Columbia. They
are returned in full when you bring back the empty container for recycling.

12. Zero Waste – 5Rs of Environment
• The 5Rs pollution prevention hierarchy is a useful planning tool for
moving towards zero waste.
• Reduce waste by choosing items with minimal packaging.
• Reuse items like shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs.
• Repurpose goods by donating items you no longer need.
• Repair broken items instead of throwing them out.
• Refuse to buy products you won’t use often - rent or borrow instead
