Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting Inc (PTS) designs and manufactures tubular products including fan shafts, rolls, and automotive components. PTS holds patents on its fan shaft and telescoping steering column products. It uses a forging process to manufacture integral journals that improves strength and grain structure. PTS can provide metallurgical data and offers options for coatings, dimensions, alloys, and custom end forming for its tubular parts.

2. About PTS
• Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting, Inc. ("PTS")
designs, manufactures, and engages in research
and development projects relating to tubular
products.
• PTS holds a patent on its tubular fan shaft
product supplied to the HVAC industry and
has gained a position in the tubular roll market
with an innovative single piece roll used in the
agricultural, glass, board and papers, furnace,
textile, printing, and specialty machine
industries.

3. About PTS
• Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting also designs and
manufactures original equipment components
for the automotive (truck) industry for both on
and off highway manufacturers and holds a
patent on a telescoping steering column.
• The PTS approach is to design and
manufacture tubular parts to a near net shape,
including the finishing to the net shape
required.

4. Design Features
• PTS has developed extensive data
relative to the forging or swaging
of journals integral to the tube,
used as the shaft or roll body.
• Micrographic analysts and
destructive testing have validated
strength increased in the forged end
section resulting in dramatic grain
refinement of the steel structure
affording greater toughness
characteristics typical of the
forging process
• X-ray defraction analysis records
no residual stresses for the PTS
process which aids holding close
tolerances during the further
processing of PTS shafting.

7. Benefits For You
• Eliminate difficult alignment of multiple bearings on solid
shafting.
• Eliminate exposure of bearings to wet air streams that
result in subsequent fan shaft failure.
• Eliminate the high cost of solid shafting and multiple drive
and bearing arrangements.
• Eliminate internal structural support members that hinder
correct air flow patterns and are costly to fabricate and
install.
• Eliminate multiple stocking of fans with various bore
sizes.

8. Features & Benefits
• No weld to fatigue and
break.
• Less labor to
manufacture a cost
saving to you our
customer.

9. Why Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting?
• 1st with the quality that the
shafting industry demands
• Integral swaged journal design
• Extra heavy journal on the
drive end to assure maximum
torsional strength
• Practical tolerances
• Balanced to perform
• Compensation for static-kinetic
and
2 plane dynamic unbalance are
standard PTS design

10. Why Pittsburgh Tubular Shafting?
• Insures straight thru-production
• All balance weights are applied internally
• No obstructions to slow assembly
• Exclusive "Rigitized" shaft design
• The standard PTS shaft is injected with near weightless
urethane foam, forming a solid core.
• This foamed in place urethane dampens the resonant
frequency of the PTS's shaft increasing its natural
frequency or critical speed up to 20% — a safety factor for
your equipment design.
• Suitable for temperatures to 350°F

11. Rigitizing Fan Shafts
About "Rigitizing"
• PTS makes no guarantees as to the
value of 'Rigitizing' relative to
increasing the critical speed of any
shaft but suggests the process as a
'safety factor' since it is not used in
the formulation for selections.
• Testing done to date reveals little
difference on small diameter
shafting but increases in value, as
the diameter and length increase. It
also varies with the wall thickness
of the part and the material.

18. SWAGING - Tube Swaging
Swaging is a process that is used
to reduce or increase the
diameter of tubes. A swaged
piece created by placing the
tube inside a die that applies
compressive force by
hammering radially.
06/05/12 18
19. SWAGING - Tube Swaging
Swaging can be further expanded by
placing a mandrel inside the tube and
applying radial compressive forces on
the outer diameter.
Thus, through the swage process, the
inner tube diameter can be a different
shape, for example a hexagon, and the
outer is still circular.
