The document discusses leadership and passion. It begins by discussing different theories of leadership, from the traditional "great man" theory to more modern shared leadership theories where leadership comes from all members. It then describes the results of a study which found that assigning a single vertical leader led to resistance, while shared leadership produced equal results but better team dynamics. Finally, it discusses the importance of having a strong sense of purpose, values, and authenticity to be an effective leader.

Leadership is an:
» “influence process involving determination of the group’s or
organization’s objectives, motivating task behavior in pursuit of
these objectives, and influencing group maintenance and culture”
(Yukl, 1989, p.5)
This means that, being a leader is:
» “Taking inspiring committed action that engages people in taking
intelligent steps, in a direction you have chosen, to achieve
something that has significant meaning for all relevant parties – to
win, in other words. Individuals can do this whether they are at the
top, middle, or bottom of an organization (Friedman, 2014)
» Make people want to do things, instead of forcing them (and using
that as a catalyst for action (Haslam et al., 2011)
» Being Ethical and fair.

Is leadership that..
» … emanates from the members within the group (Pearce & Sims, 2002)
» It is a social and motivational influence process.
» This means that..
» Each individual is capable of leadership.
» Note: leadership is not management. Management is control. Leadership is
positive influence to inspire and empower.

Results
» Team success was equal, in both teams.
» However, team dynamics show:
» Vertical leader became out-group member
» Leader showed “power and control behaviors”
» Led to resistance in team
» This suggests that it may not be effective to assign a leader who
is responsible for the teams result when:
» there is little to no clarity in the assignment,
» The assignment is complex and requires creativity (van Leeuwen, 2014)
