Environmental Justice (EJ) Study Scientist / Assistant Events Coordinator
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Coordinated and authored USEPA EJ Grant study to re-assess lead contamination in residential soils in the
Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, Indianapolis, Indiana. EJ Grant study was conducted to determine if
2005 USEPA Super Fund emergency cleanup of residential soils adequately cleaned up lead
contamination. The study included sampling over 500 residential properties to determine extent of re-
contamination. The EJ Study ended in May 2012 and concluded additional residential soils cleanup should
be seriously considered because persistent high levels of lead in soils still remaining. USEPA has
conducted additional confirmation of lead contamination in the neighborhood and has taken the IKE EJ
study under consideration for additional Super Fund cleanup of residential soils [Update – On May 3, 2016
the USEPA concurred with the study findings and recommended cleanup and will initiate a further
cleanup of 78 highly lead contaminated properties in 2016]
- Assisted in coordinating and conducting annual spring (Safe Gardening) and fall (Health Homes)
