TheEuropeanNationsCupwastheoriginalideaofHenriDelaunay.HewasthePresidentoftheFranceFoot-
ballAssociationandthefirstGeneralSecretaryofUEFA.Mr.DelaunaywasalsoaFIFABoardmemberduring
the1920sandplayedaroleinthedevelopmentoftheWorldCup.HefirstproposedtheideaforaEuropean
CupofNationsin1927;however,itwasnotgivenseriousconsiderationbyUEFAuntil1958.
Unfortunately,Mr.Delaunaydidnotlivetowitnessthetournamentthatheenvisioned.Inhishonor,thefirst
trophyin1960wasdedicatedtohimandstillmaintainshisname.
From1960to1996,thecompetitionwascalledtheEuropeanNationsCup.Thefirsttournamenthadfour
teamsandwouldremainatthisnumberuntil1980.
From1980to1992,eightteamsparticipatedinthetournament.
The“Euro”brandinglabelwasfirstusedin1996(England)and16teamsparticipated.
ThefirstjointhostedtournamentwasEuro2000(BelgiumandTheNetherlands).Euro2016isthe15thqua-
drennialtournamentsince1960.
