Notes are written on a stave
A stave always has five lines

We can place note heads on the lines or in the spaces
When describing where a note is,
we count the lines and spaces from the bottom
1st line
2nd line
3rd line
4th line
5th line
1st space
2nd space
3rd space
4th space
“below the first line”
“above the fifth line”

The higher the note is on the stave,
the higher it sounds
Low sounding note High sounding note

We can write notes which are higher or lower
than those on the stave
To do so, we use ledger lines
Ledger lines act as an extension of the stave

When drawing notes with stems:
up on the right
down on the left
(can go either way)

always go from the end of the stem, back towards the note head, to the right of the stem
