Sigma Nu was the first "honor" fraternity founded in the United States in 1869 by three students at the Virginia Military Institute who disapproved of the hazing they experienced there. They formed a secret society called the Legion of Honor, which later became Sigma Nu Fraternity, to promote integrity, honor and conscience and end hazing at VMI. Today Sigma Nu has nearly 200,000 members across nearly 250 active chapters in the U.S. and Canada.
