Living in the IT Era
INTRODUCTION TO INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS
TECHNOLOGY
 In a research performed by Zuppo (2012), the phrase "information and
communications technology," or ICT, was defined as "technologies that
enable the transmission of information and different kinds of electronic
communication.“
 In every situation, the necessity for gadgets such as cellphones,
computers, and tablets is recognized.
 Information, communication, and technology (ICT) are the three terms
that makeup ICT.
Information
Information is processed data.
HOW DO WE GATHER
DATA?
1. Reading
2. Inquiry
3. Study
4. research
Information-Transmission
Devices
1. Telephones
2. Televisions
3. Radios
Communication
 It's a method of exchanging information between people using
both verbal and nonverbal communication.
 Transmitting messages is the act of communication.
Technology
 People's everyday activities have improved as a result of
technological advancements.
 Telephones, fax machines, mobile devices, and the internet, as
stated before, have made communication simpler and quicker.
HISTORY OF COMPUTER
First-generation computer (1946-1959)
In 1946, the world's first electronic computer was built. The
Electronic Numeric Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC) is a first-
generation computer designed by J. Presper Eckert and John W.
Mauchlyfrom the University of Pennsylvania and funded by the
United States Army.
Second-generation Computer (1959-1965)
The inner parts of the computer in this second version were made
of transistors. The vacuum tubes of the first-generation computer
were considerably larger, slower, and less reliable than
transistors. They used less energy and produced less heat, but
they were still very expensive.
Third-generation Computer (1965-1971)
Jack Kilby developed the integrated circuit (IC) in 1965, which
replaced transistors as the computer's inner parts.
Fourth-generation Computer (1971-1980)
VLSI circuits were utilized in the construction of computers from
1971 to 1980. On a single chip known as the microprocessor,
there are about 5,000 transistors and other circuit components
with their linked circuits.
Fifth-generation Computer (1980-onwards)
With the manufacturing of microprocessor chips with 10 millions
electronic components, VLSI technology has developed into
ultra-large-scale integration (ULSI) technology in this fifth
generation. This generation is concerned with computer
intelligence, which includes artificial intelligence (AI), natural
language, and expert systems that understand the methods and
procedures for creating computersthat think like humans.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
 HARDWARE
The actual gadgets on a computer are referred to as hardware. It
refers to any visible and touchable component of the computer.
The hardware of a computer is made up of interconnected
electrical components that control the computer's functioning, as
well as input and output devices.
 SOFTWARE
The programs that run on a computer and perform certain
functions.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
 HARDWARE
INPUT DEVICES
Input devices take data and instructions from the user or another
computer system on the internet and input or transmit them.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Any physical component that sends data to one or more individuals is
referred to as an output device.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
 HARDWARE
INPUT DEVICES
Keyboard is the most common input device that accepts
letters, numbers, and commands from the user.
Mouse lets one select options from on-screen menus. A
mouse is used by moving it on flat surface,
pressing its two buttons (left & right), and
scrolling the wheel that is located between the
buttons.
Microphone allows a user to speak into the computer to input
data and instructions.
Scanner converts printed material (such as text and
pictures) into a form the computer can use.
Digital camera allows one to take pictures then transfer the
photographed images to the computer or printer
instead of storing the images on a traditional film.
PC video
camera
is a digital video camera that enables users to
create a movie or take still photographs
electronically.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
 HARDWARE
OUTPUT DEVICES
Printer
produces text and graphics on a physical medium
such as papers.
Monitor displays text, graphics, and videos on a screen.
Many monitors look similar to a television. The
three types of monitor available in the market
are the following:
 Cathode ray tube (CRT)
 Liquid crystal display (LCD)
 Light-emitting diode (LED)
Speaker allows one to hear music, voice, and other
sounds. The signal used to produce the sound
that comes from a computer speaker is created
by the computer’s sound card.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
 HARDWARE
STORAGE DEVICES
There are many types of storage devices which include the flash disk
drive, a small portable storage device often referred to as pen drives,
thumb drives, or jump drives. Another type of storage is the hard
disk drive. Most personal computers have at least one non-
removable hard disk that is regarded as a non-volatile memory
which permanently stores and retrieves data.
Another storage device is the compact disc. It is a flat, round, and
portable metal disc. One type of compact disc is a CD-ROM, which
can be accessed using most CD and DVD drives.
COMPONENTS OF A COMPUTER
 HARDWARE
STORAGE DEVICES
Memory
Card
A memory card is also known as a flash memory
card or SD card (Secure Digital Card), is an
external storage medium that allows us to save
and delete information.
Hard disk Also known as Hard drive , HD, HDD)can be
found installed in almost every desktop and
laptop computer. It stores files for the operating
system and software programs as well as user
documents, such as photographs, textiles,
videos, and audio.
CD/DVD A Digital Versatile Disc or Digital Video Disc is
similar to a CD-ROM in that you can only read
data from it. The main difference is that the
DVD can store much more data than CD-ROM,
CD-R, or CD-RW they can only record data
once, then the data becomes permanent on the
disc.
