V2X communication is the passing of information from a vehicle to any entity that may affect the vehicle, and vice versa. This information exchange can be used for a host of safety, mobility and environmental applications to include driver assistance and vehicle safety , speed adaptation and warning, emergency response, safety, traveller information, navigation, traffic operations and demand management, personal navigation, commercial fleet planning and payment transactions. There is significant societal benefit and commercial value to delivering safety, mobility and convenience applications that rely on V2X.

MulteFire is a new LTE-based air-interface that is being developed to operate solely in unlicensed spectrum, enabling it to offer the best of both worlds: LTE-like performance with Wi-Fi-like deployment simplicity. MulteFire will broaden the LTE ecosystem with new deployment scenarios, such as enhanced broadband services and neutral hosts benefiting operators to augment wireless services. MulteFire applies to any unlicensed or shared spectrum when over-the-air contention is needed (listen before talk), such as the global 5 GHz band or the new 3.5 GHz band in the USA. The combination of neutral spectrum with high performing LTE and self-organizing networks will enable neutral host small-cells in more locations.

In this paper, we introduce the Android-based driver assistance system DriveAssist. The application allows the visualization of traffic information that originates from Vehicle-to-X (V2X) communication services as well as from central traffic services (CTSs) on the user’s smartphone. Besides giving the driver an overview of the traffic around her/him on a map view, DriveAssist can also run in the background and trigger warning messages for certain traffic incidents. The system design allows for augmenting any vehicle with a sophisticated audio-visual information system for V2X data and information, and thereby complements the vehicle’s on-board driver assistance systems at competitive costs.
