6. Philosophy and Methods
Conscientization means breaking through
prevailing mythologies to reach new levels of
awareness - in particular, awareness of
oppression, being an "object" of others’
will rather than a self-determining
"subject.”
Conscientization…differs from "consciousness
raising" in that the latter may involve
transmission of preselected knowledge.
The process of conscientization involves
identifying contradictions in experience
through dialogue and becoming part of the
process of changing the world.

knowledge, changing attitudes and behaviour, dealing
better with stigma (individual and societal levels), better
uptake of services, etc.
Conducive environment: better links/relationships
between affected communities and local, regional and
national governance structures; assist in achieving better
understanding of legal policy frameworks for both
implementers and affected communities
Editor's Notes
Information and 20 years of prevention campaigns that have had little tangible result until recently. Who sets the agendas? Who raises awareness about what? Freire points out that people have to find their own solutions to their own problems. Said differently, prevention needs to be an inclusive undertaking; Inside out approach.
So beyond providing good quality services to a lot of people with little costs, what sort of larger impact does this have – beyond the self esteem of individuals? Grass roots advocacy
