Over the period of six weeks, a cohort of twenty carefully-selected students would go through the Appalachian region where they would use the concepts of entrepreneurship they have learned in the classroom to do hands-on work with community partners and business owners. My team and I had the pleasure of improving a bed and breakfast model in Eastern Kentucky. In addition, I learned a lot about different entrepreneurs and what entrepreneurship really is and is not. Increasing my knowledge about Appalachia through trips and visits to different places within the region was critical to the entire learning process. Empathy is very key and a concept often applied to several aspects of life. Gaining wonderful insights into the design company IDEO was massive for me personally which is why my presentation was titled EPG: Design | Guide | Create, a theme framed around the three key concepts of the design and consulting firm located in Palo Alto, CA. I walk you through a quick summation of these memorable six weeks. Enjoy!

Class Disloyalty: “There is nothing lower than the poor stealing from the poor. It’s hard enough as it is. We sure as hell don’t need to make it even harder on each other.”

Expose outsiders to the beauty and richness of the Appalachian region
Matters because the region makes for a great place to host adventure tourists who can help bring revenue into the region to help boost the Appalachian economy
Customers that make up the large tourism market come to experience the significant nature and distinct culture of the Appalachian region and people
The region has a high distress rate, evident by a large number of distress counties

Reviewing businesses on Yelp and TripAdvisor
Developing profitable models to boost local businesses in the Appalachian region
Individual good will be to use skills to exploit select industries so as to channel profit into one’s pocket
Tradeoff will be where highly skilled entrepreneurs add social mission to their venture goals so as to make sure they give back to their society in some shape or form
The common good makes one credible as people are willing to spend on a business that channels portions of its profits back into their lives either directly or indirectly
