Early Childhood Inclusive
Education
- What is Diversity? Give examples of diversity in your
family; in your country; in our TCPB 232 classroom
- What is the relationship between diversity and
inclusion??? Use ideas and technical terms from last
class session
- What is the Early Childhood Education age range?
Birth to age 5-6
- When you hear the word socks, what word comes
automatically to your mind? Salt? Fish?
Early Childhood Inclusive
Education (ECIE)
• In ECE, diversity and inclusion go together like a pair of wings, salt and
pepper; socks and shoes, etc……..
• Provide similar pair terms that are frequently used in Bahrain
• This exercise is meant to make you visualize and categorize in your
mind these 2 terms together: Diversity and inclusion
• Diversity is a characteristic of ECE
• There is a trend world wide for ECE to be inclusive education
• Sources of diversity: developmental, social, genetic- Give examples
from TCPB 112
Early Childhood Inclusive Education
Inclusion in the early years
means: “every child has
access to, participates
meaningfully in, and
experiences positive
outcomes from early
childhood education and
care programs”.
Inclusion occurs when all
children regardless of
their diversity, have equal
access and opportunities
to participate in and learn
from everyday routines,
interactions, play and
learning experiences that
occur in the early years
Early Childhood
Inclusive
Education
Barriers: Personal; attitudinal; and
organizational
Personal: workload and / or lack of self
confidence
Attitudinal: social bias; stereotypes; =
negative attitude towards differences
Organizational: Funding; qualified
educators; lack of supportive leadership
Early
Childhood
Inclusive
Education
Myths:
- Inclusion is only about disability !!
Suggest an alternative:
- Inclusion is detrimental to other group
or class members!!! Suggest an
alternative
- Inclusion and early intervention are
not the same!!! Suggest an alternative
- Discuss the above by connecting to
the context of Bahrain
Early Childhood
Inclusive
Education: Early
Intervention
• Inclusion and Early intervention are
interrelated yet have separate
outcomes
• Inclusion refers to all children
holistically - General
• Early intervention refers to a process of
providing every child additional
support when needed and by a
specialist
• The outcome of early intervention is to
support individual child to develop the
skills he/she needs to take part in
everyday activities and to be included
in the family and community life
• The process of early intervention is
achieved in an inclusive environment
Early
Intervention:
Conceptual
Frameworks
- Intentional Teaching - Early
Years Learning Framework:
Australia- Department of
Education, Employment and
Workplace
- Developmentally
Appropriate Practice –
National Association for the
Education of Young Children
(NAEYC): Professional non-
government organization,
USA.
Conceptual
Framework:
Intentional
Teaching
• In Early Years Learning
Framework, “intentional
teaching” is: Purposeful;
thoughtful; and deliberate
• Educators actions stem from
deep thoughtfulness
• Potential effects have been
seriously considered
• Educators understand why
they are doing what they are
doing
• Educators know the strategy
required for the teachable
moment
Conceptual
Framework:
Intentional
Teaching
- According to this framework
strategies to support interactions
among children with and without
disabilities are:
- Size of groups
- Use of materials likely to
encourage social interactions
- Model appropriate behaviors
- Use a range of communication
strategies: gestural, pictorial,
oral,….
- Use self talk
- Be firm when necessary
Conceptual
Framework:
Intentional
Teaching
• Strategies cont’d:
• Acknowledge considerate
behavior
• High expectations
• Involve families
• Communicate with families
• Empower children
• Play-based pedagogy
Reference: Opening Eyes onto Inclusion and
Diversity- Chapter 4: Opening eyes onto inclusion
and diversity in early childhood education
Conceptual
Framework:
Developmentally
Appropriate
Practice
• This Framework is adopted by the
National Association for the
Education of Young Children (NAEYC):
NAYEC Position Statement on
Developmentally Appropriate
Practice (DAP) – 2020
• NAEYC defines “DAP” as “educational
and caregiving methods that promote
each child’s optimal learning and
development through a strength-
based approach of joyful, engaged
learning”.
• Educators implement DAP by
recognizing the multiple assets all
young children bring to the early
learning program as individuals and
as members of families and
communities.
Conceptual
Framework:
Developmentally
Appropriate
Practice
• Recommendations by DAP Framework:
• All domains of child development are
equally important: physical, cognitive,
social and emotional, linguistic
(including bilingual or multilingual
development).
• Variations in the progression of
learning and development due to
cultural contexts, experiences and
individual differences must be
considered seriously
• Children are active learners, constantly
taking in organizing information to
create meaning through their
relationships, interactions with their
environment and their experiences
Developmentally Appropriate Practice
Conceptual
Framework:
Developmentally
appropriate
Practice
• More Recommendations:
• Curricula and teaching methods should build
on each child’s assets by connecting their
experiences in the school or learning
environment to their home and community
• Play is essential for all children, birth through
age 8
• Play promotes joyful learning that fosters self-
regulation, language, cognitive and social
competencies
• Early childhood education curriculum should
be an integrated curriculum that cuts across
academic disciplines or subject areas because
children learn in an integrated fashion
• Technology and interactive media can be
valuable tools supporting development and
learning when used responsibly and
intentionally
