William and the three bottles of Ice coffee 2nd week
1. The past week had definitely not been a good one for eleven year old William. He with
his cousin Trevor had drunk three bottles of Ice coffee and replaced the bottles with some
of the coffee that he had made. The Ice coffee that he had made virtually consisted of
more Whiskey than water.
This was because he had assumed Brandy and Whiskey to be the same thing. He had seen
his grandma pouring Brandy to the Ice Coffee and when they needed some water, he had
again assumed that a little bit of extra Whiskey would not make a difference.
It had actually made a big difference. A much bigger difference than William had thought.
When his grandmother had opened the fridge and taken the bottles of Ice Coffee into the
kitchen both himself and his cousin Trevor had been staring at each quite nervously. Both
were silent for some time. William was the first to speak.
William asked Trevor to come outside to play something because it was quite boring
inside. They had a number of games that they would play with each other when they got
together.
Some of the games included throwing stones at the trees in their neighbor’s garden and
more than once his neighbor would call his mother to complain about his behavior.
Sometimes they would aim at the pipes in their neighbor’s garden William had definitely
given a lot of trouble for an eleven year old boy.
There would be times when William would wait till it was 4:00 Clock in the evening.
4:00 Clock was the time that their old neighbor’s would retire to go to sleep.
At sharp 4:00 they would carry his mother’s cat and throw it into their neighbor’s garden.
The results would be amusing. William and Trevor would hide themselves in a part of
roof in their garden where they would not be seen. The effect of the cat in the neighbor’s
garden would have a couple of results.
The first being the cat running for its life as soon as it landed on the neighbor’s garden.
The second being the four dogs that his neighbor’s owned chasing the cat barking at the
top of their voices.
They would bark and bark and chase the poor cat. William and Trevor would look at all
this with a drink of sherbet and laugh and laugh and laugh.
The third affect would be the best because in a couple of minutes time the old man would
come running and sometimes William wondered how such an old man would run with
such agility.
The old man would come running towards their wall and start screaming for his father.
He usually would wear nothing but the sarong and the times William wished this person
would jump over the wall was uncountable.
2. William thought he would jump over the wall one day but he never did!
At the same time his wife would be dialing William’s land phone to lay a formal
complaint to his mother.
Usually as soon as they saw the man scream, they would silently retire to the other side of
the roof and come from the front with looks of complete innocence.
Today William was not in the mood to do anything like that. He already had enough
things to be worried about.
He just seemed to have a gut feeling that something was terribly wrong
He could imagine Trevor’s grandmother who would be the first to taste the Ice coffee,
drinking it and then going mad!
He had seen his uncles drinking Whiskey and do crazy things.
Would Trevor’s grandmother act crazy?
Would she start singing at the top of her voice?
Would her voice start to get louder like how he had usually seen his Uncles when they
had parties?
The worst part was, Trevor’s grandmother usually always emptied her glass of Ice Coffee
in one big gulp. She would then comment on how excellent the Ice Coffee was.
And then the others would drink.
All this was running through little Williams mind. Each second grew worse for William.
Each second he grew more nervous. The nervousness was not because he was afraid of
what would happen to Trevor’s grandmother.
He was actually keen to see what would happen to Trevor’s grandmother!
He was nervous of being discovered as the culprit for emptying three bottles of Ice
Coffee and mixing Whiskey to the bottles of Ice Coffee.
If his father got to know there was no way he would buy the Kookaburra bat he wanted
more than anything else at the moment.
This was the only reason he didn’t want to get caught.
William actually wanted to see what effect it would have on his aunts as well!
His uncles didn’t usually stay to drink the Ice Coffee. It would be his grandmother’s and
his aunts that would drink it.
3. Would they also argue about politics that William never understood?
Arguments that William would overhear. Arguments that William thought were foolish.
“When they would play something outside, they are sitting in one place and arguing on
stupid things, where’s the sense of it all!” William would complain to his cousin Trevor
more than once.
His mother called him inside. In a couple of minutes he would have to go to the dining
room. This was the most dreadful part of the party. He had to recite a poem in front of his
aunts.
His cousin would recite and get a round of applause. Then he would be invited. His
mother’s face would be tensed and usually this was one time that brave little William
would be afraid of.
And then the usual customs of “William you have grown taller, my goodness William you
are nearly as tall as your father”
And the usual questions of “How are your studies William?”
William had quickly recited the poem. He had politely answered all the questions and
ignored the ones he thought were irrelevant.
William could see his cousin Trevor seated with his mother. He was looking at Trevor but
Trevor did seem to return the gaze.
The sandwiches were handed around. His Uncles had retired outside.
The Ice Coffee was brought into the room and a sight William had seen for many years,
Trevor’s grandmother eyes lighting up as soon as she saw the Ice Coffee, pouring a glass
for herself and greedily gulping it down.
William was watching everything his mouth wide open almost like in slow motion.
He could see Trevor’s grandmother smiling and raising her glass.
He could see the glass lowering in on her lips and that was all he saw!
The next instant all the Ice Coffee she had in her mouth she had spat on Trevor who was
sitting right across her. She had got up like a bolt of lightning and in couple of seconds
she had gulped a sandwich down her throat. Everybody seemed alarmed at what they
saw.
An old woman closing in on 80 running towards the table, spitting hysterically was a
sight indeed and when she had gulped a sandwich everybody was even more astonished.
By this time however William thought it was not a very good idea to stay in the room.
4. He had just one plan. Retreat! Explanations would be done later. He held his stomach and
quickly retreated upstairs! Nobody had seen him. He was safe, at least for the moment.
A few days later William was playing by himself in the garden, feeling sad. His father
had made sure that he got nothing of the pocket money. His father had also stopped him
from going to cricket practices for 2 weeks.
Would things get any worse he was thinking to himself?
Nobody had believed him when he told that Trevor had drunk the Ice Coffee with him.
Everybody in his family had thought that he had drunk the three bottles of Ice Coffee
alone.
He heard footsteps from behind him. It was his grandmother. She was coming towards to
him. William turned towards his Grandmother. His grandmother came close to him and
whispered something into the ears of William. William seemed so happy that he started
smiling and holding his grandmother’s hand he started running around her in circles.
His grandmother had given him enough money to the Kookaburra bat.
Life seemed worth living once again. He had drunk three bottles of Ice Coffee. Mixed
Whiskey and made Ice Coffee consisting of more Whiskey than water and he had finally
seen one of his Grandmother’s drink it and here he was holding the bat of his dreams, the
Kookaburra.
