Impact of technology on information pollution
1. IMPACT OF TECHNOLOGY ON INFORMATION POLLUTION
We are living in an information age (1945-present) with a lot of
advancement in information technology from modern computer
(1950) to Laptop computer (1989) in addition to the internet, a
vast source of information. Technology especially information
technology is where we are more concerned and are dependent
on. Industrial revolution, in fact of its positive influence on
making life easier, left a threat of global warming which is the
most discussing issue of the present world. The same case is
began to seen due to information revolution, which is raising a
new threat of information pollution. Now the question is what is
the form of threat that information pollution when reaches to its
peak will left for us?
Information, is a source of knowledge we use for decision
making in our daily life and to perform daily task. Anything that
distracts our attention from doing so are information pollutant.
Simply irrelevant, unnecessary or unasked information act as
information pollutant and causes adverse effect on human
activities, which is referred as an information pollution.
Technological developments are now giving rise to a vast sharing
of information that includes information pollutant along with the
required information. The information pollutant causes
information overload and reduces the quality of information
resulting in confusion along with anxiety, decision paralysis and
2. stress to the Mankind. Not only at the individual level, it also
cause the loss of perspective and moral values of the society.
People are now becoming less sensitive toward problems due to
low quality and large quantity of information.
Information pollution though exist without technology but
computer based communication method such as e-mail, instant
messaging and other social media are becoming the vast source
of it. Blog, Social network, personal website and mobile
technology are creating lot of pollution that not only harm
mental health but also lead to arguments and finally conflict
among individuals, societies and between countries. The cause
of today’s conflict between personal and global level are more
concerned with information rather than material, which is due
to misunderstanding created by information pollutant. The
raising of unwanted issue due to these technologies even
sometime results in war between countries and causes the loss
of life and properties.
Now a big question arises “Is 3rd
world war a threat to the human
civilization due to Information revolution?” Since Global
warming due to industrial revolution is still a danger, we cannot
neglect information pollution and must pay attention toward it
before anything like third world war happens.
