Chapter 1- Introduction
Online banking or internet banking is introduced in banking sector for bringing customer satisfaction, add thereby, enhancing the profitability of banks. Internet banking is beating the banking services. Internet banking offers numerous benefits to the customers in context of the easiness to use, simple operations, and transactional costs (Fatima, 2021). Internet banking improves the productivity and profitability of banks so that existing and prospective customers can benefit from a higher level of comfort in ongoing transactions.
However, it also reflects new challenges for banks in regulation and supervision of financial institutions and formulation and implementation of economic plan. At present, there is an increasing demand of usage of internet banking among customers, but at the same time, increase in facilities of internet banking by commercial banks leads to security threats and risks (Hobikoğlu, 2015). The increase in trend of internet banking has gained the focus of legal and illegal banking practices by subjecting customers to identity thefts, frauds, phishing, and several other kinds of risks and security issues.
1.1. Background
Banks play a significant role in the advancement of economies of nations by providing various services to the public. Advancement of the technology, use of internet, increase in online commercial activities, banks have faced a major shift in the banking services. It has become a significant requirement for better and modern banking services (Sandhu, 2018). Internet banking services provided by commercial bank surpass the normal performance form and does not rely on a particular time and place. Banks performs banking activities with the help of information and communication technology, be it conventional or unconventional mode of banking. Unconventional method of banking implies to the offline banking or face to face interaction method. Regarding the impact of online banking services on customer satisfaction, (Almuhirat, 2016) stated that internet banking demonstrated the automatic transfer of conventional and modern banking services straightforwardly to the customers through collaborative electronic channels.
Internet banking shows an electronic and remote distribution network for providing virtual financial services. Researchers has defined internet banking as using internet for acting as a remote delivery network for banking sector; and strengthen major processes and combine various networks and convert the main brand into electronic brand (Anesti, 2004).
The idea for this research arose from the fact that number of frauds are inherently increasing (Clark, 2021). Hackers and fraudulent online websites are defrauding customers while making any online transactions. Therefore, it has become quite significant to investigate various current threats to the customers with the use of online banking.
