that poses specific challenges for treating disease and
promoting health

or mature
It is a period of transition from
childhood to adulthood

psychological (cognitive and
emotional) growth

developed
A time of changing social relationships,
expectations, roles and responsibilities

Middle Adolescence : 14 – 16
years
Late Adolescence : 17 – 19

Late adolescence:
Distinct identity, well formed opinion and ideas
11. INTRODUCTION…….
Adolescents are a very diverse group
A boy of 12 is very different from a young man
of 19
A boy of 12 is also very different - physically
but also psychologically from a girl of the same
age
Two boys of 12 who are growing up in very
similar conditions may develop in very different
ways
All these categories of adolescents have
different needs
12. Demographics of Adolescents
How many adolescents are there?
1.2 billion people b/w ages of 10 to 19 – the
largest population of adolescents ever in history
Four out of every five adolescents live in the
developing world
Half of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa is
under the age of 15, & less than 5% is over 60:
about 60% of population is made up of children
& young people
