2. SURFACE LANDMARKS
Medial and lateral condyles of tibia
Tibial tuberosity
Head of the fibula
Shin
Medial surface of tibia
Medial border of tibia
Gastrocnemius
Medial malleolus & Lateral malleolus
Peroneal trochlea
3. SURFACE LANDMARKS
Sustentaculum tali
Tuberosity of navicular bone
Head of the talus
Tuberosity of the base of 5th metatarsal bone
Posterior tibial artery
Dorsalis pedis artery
Tendon of tibialis anterior
Tendon of extensor hallucis longus
Extensor digitorum brevis
First metatarsophalangeal joint
5. SUPERFICIAL VEINS :
Dorsal venous arch :
Lies on dorsum of foot
• Over proximal parts of metatarsal bones
Great or long saphenous vein :
Union of medial end of dorsal venous arch with
medial marginal vein
Drains medial side of the great toe
Small or short saphenous vein :
Union of the lateral end of the dorsal venous arch
with the lateral marginal vein
6. CUTANEOUS NERVES :
Infrapatellar branch of the saphenous nerve :
• Pierces sartorius and deep fascia on medial side of knee
Saphenous nerve :
• Branch of posterior division of femoral nerve
• Pierces deep fascia on medial side of knee between sartorius and gracilis
Lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf :
• Branch of common peroneal nerve
• Pierces deep fascia over lateral head of gastrocnemius
Superficial peroneal nerve :
• Branch of common peroneal nerve
• Arises : lateral side of neck of fibula deep to fibres of peroneus longus
• Descends : between peroneal muscles
7. Superficial peroneal nerve :
• Branch of common peroneal nerve
• Arises : Lateral side of neck of fibula deep to fibres of peroneus longus
• Descends : Between peroneal muscles
• Supply :
o Skin over lower one-third of lateral side of leg
o Skin over entire dorsum of foot with exception
Lateral border - Supplied by sural nerve.
Medial border up to base of great toe - Supplied by saphenous nerve
Cleft between first and second toes - Supplied by deep peroneal nerve
Distal phalanges including nail beds of 1- 5 toes
Sural nerve :
• Branch of tibial nerve
• Arises : Middle of popliteal fossa
• Runs vertically downwards
8. Deep peroneal nerve :
• Terminates by supplying skin
• Adjoining cleft between first and second toes
Digital branches of medial and lateral plantar nerves :
• Curve upwards and supply distal parts of dorsum of toes
• Medial plantar nerve supplies : Medial 3½ toes
• Lateral plantar nerve supplies : Lateral 1½ toes
9. DEEP
FASCIA
Deep facia surrounds leg
and its continuous above
with deep fascia of thigh
Below tibial condyles it
attached to periosteum on
anterior and medial boarder
of tibia
Intermuscular septa divide
the leg into
3 compartments
• Anterior
• Posterior
• Lateral
