1. UMAID BHAWAN PALACE
• Umaid Bhawan Palace, located at Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, is
one of t he world' s largest private residences.
• A part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels. Named after
Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present owner Gaj
Singh of the palace,
• This edifice has 347 rooms and serves as the principal resi -
rooms and serves as the principal residence of the erstwhile
Jodhpur royal family .
• A part of the pal ace also houses a museum. Umaid Bhawan
Palace was called Chittar Palace during its construction due to
use of stones drawn from the Chitttar hill where it is located.
Ground for the foundation of the building was broken on 18
November 1929 by Maharaja Umaid .
THE MAKING
• The foundation stone of Lanchester’s Umaid Bhawan,was laid
on 18 November 1929 by the Maharaja himself on the rocky
Chittar Hill south east of the city. The palace was originally
called Chittar Palace.
• Three thousands men and women worked on Chittar hill for 15
years. They used pink tinged, cream coloured stone from
quarries 10 miles away , and marble from “Makrana.”

• The Umai d Bhavan palace
was converted into a heritage
hotel in 1977.
• The Palace is now segmented
into the Royal residence, the
Heritage Hotel and the
Museum.
• In a part of the palace the
royal family of Jodhpur still
lives. In another part of the
Palace.
• India's Umaid Bhavan palace
has an amazing Central
Rotunda, the cupola rising to
a hundred and five feet high.
There is also the Throne Room
with it exquisite Ramayana
murals, a library , a private
museum, an indoor swimming
pool , a Billiards Room, tennis
courts and unique marble

Jodhpur's Umaid Bhawan Palace was actually built for
the welfare of the people.
The purpose was to give employment to t he people e
of Jodhpur during the period of drought and famine.
The construction of the palace utilized approximately
one million square feet ( 90, 000 m².
UmaidBhavan palace of Jodhpur i s a fine example of
IndoSaracenic architecture. Over three thousand
artisans were employed in the construction of this
palace.
2. UMAID BHAWAN PALACE
ARCHITECTURE
• The palace is in its symmetrical planning, and
integration of Indian architectural styles, and the
deeply imbued in Rajput tradition.
• Like medieval Rajput palaces it is divided into two
sections the zenan or ladies wing and the mardana,
male wing both with separate entrances, the former
with an enclosed garden and a hidden passages to
the swimming pool and public rooms. The ladies
could watch ceremonies, durbars and parties,
unobserved. The durbar and banquet halls the
auditorium have galleries on the first floor were
screens were draped for the zenan.

displays of ART Deco furniture,

• DESIGNS AND FURNITURE
• Furniture and fittings were originally
designed by maples of London in the art
deco style that was the pinnacle of fashion
in Europe and America in thirties.
• They were despatched in Bombay in 1942
but tragically the ship carrying them was
sunk enrooted by the Germans.
