- 1. Globalization
By Rocky Williams
The collapse of communism and a rejection of the command economy has lead to
unprecedented growth in developing nations and the general global economy. Globalization is
essentially the spread of economic activity beyond borders and even beyond the seas
themselves. Globalization allows for the citizens of China, Germany and South Africa to have
iphones. We have the ability to consume, produce and trade with people without so much as
knowing who they are or for that matter what part of the earth they live on. Globalization is not
without criticism, but is by far good for the betterment and advancement of human society.
The fall of the soviet union marked the beginning of the dominance of the market system,
and capitalism blossomed all around the world. The capitalist systems of economic organization
are not perfect, but are by far the best available system. Now, globalization is nothing more than
a collection of markets interconnected on an international scale. These markets bring the buyers
and sellers together faster and more efficiently stimulating wealth and economic growth.
Globalization is also complex in its layers, because of the issues often associated with
international trade, such as regional economic issues, regualtion, trade wars and international
conflict. Most of the distortions present in globalized markets are almost always linked to
government intervention via tariffs, currency manipulation, and conflict.
The central issues around globalization is often cited as being pollution and exploitation.
These are often seen by leftists as being the inherent flaws of capitalist society, but nothing
couldn’t be any further from reality. First the issue of exploitation within globalization is not
consistent with capitalist values or a free market ideology. Even in the extreme case of the
sweatshop workers, we have to be mindful that the only way anyone would work in a sweetshop
is if they have no better opportunities available, meaning they are receiving more benefit and
utility than they had before. This isn’t exploitation, it’s opportunity. We often make the mistake
of comparing the poor of the developing world to the standards of our society, which is far more
developed. When speaking of “exploitation”, we often lose track of relative nature of progress
within different economic systems.
Pollution in regards to globalism isn’t a problem without an answer. Pollution should be
dealt with within a market framework allowing people to create solutions as they have done
throughout time. We must understand that there is an environmental cost towards our
consumption, but that is hardly reason for panic. In a global society fast information
dissemination along with new technology and pure human ingenuity will design, and build more
sustainable businesses practices. A globalized world is far better equipped to handle
environmental issues than several fractured command societies.
