ESC President Interview 海外学会主席访谈
In the 2015 CSC&OCC Conference, Clinic interviewed the current president of the European Society of Cardiology
(ESC) Prof. Fausto Pinto. In the interview, we talked about the main contribution ESC has made to the cardiovascular
field in Europe and worldwide, ESC's significant strategy, and the fruitful collaboration between the ESC and Chinese
communities.
Especially, Dr. Pinto declared that one of the ESC’s main strategic decisions was continual support of education as well as
a strong advocacy strategy. For doing so, “we also do work in advocacy and lobbying with several European structures
such as the European Union as well as the European Parliament,” noted Dr. Pinto. Additionally, Dr. Pinto told Clinic, the
ultimate goal of ESC is not only to stand as one of the main cardiovascular education providers but to also be the voice of
the patients and entire cardiovascular community.

dedicated to treatment, while only 3% is dedicated to prevention.
Thus, prevention is one key area where we, as a scientific society
and community, must do more. We must be dedicated to smoking
cessation, fighting obesity and diabetes, controlling blood
pressure, and promoting overall healthy lifestyles in order to truly
increase prevention of cardiovascular disease. The prevention field
is lacking most and requires further action.
Clinic: In what action do you think does ESC contribute
to prevention?
Dr. Pinto: It is imperative to increase awareness of the disease.
This requires advocacy as well as lobbying in order to work
jointly with decision makers. We are currently involved in such
Clinic: The cardiovascular field has developed over the
past half-century. In such a background, what is lacking
most currently?
Dr. Pinto: Over the past decades, the cardiovascular field and
its subfields have substantially developed. Many of the sub-
specialties such as PCI, radiology, heart failure, acute coronary
syndrome, dyslipidemia, diagnoses and imaging have seen major
development. I think the area that is currently lacking most is
prevention. Cardiologists are extremely skilled at diagnosing and
treating the disease; however, we are lacking in preventing the
disease. This is definitely an area in need of improvement.
For example, 97% of the overall budget for health in Europe is

action in Europe. There we ensure that all of the information on
the disease is conveyed to the decision makers.
Furthermore, we must work with patient populations and the
media to ensure that the message of cardiovascular disease is
propagated. In doing so, we must propagate the message in a
positive way for the promotion of healthy lifestyles and healthy
habits to result in people living longer and better lives.
Clinic: We know that ESC is the largest cardiovascular
society in the world. What is the most significant impact
of ESC on European clinics? What has it contributed to
this field?
Dr. Pinto: The European Society of Cardiology is now the
largest cardiovascular society in the world with roughly 90,000
health professional members. The society’s mission stands
to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease in Europe and
worldwide. We do so through a myriad of activities and education
programs. Our main congress, which was recently held in London,
is the largest event in cardiovascular medicine in the world as
nearly 33,000 members participated in the congress. We also
organize additional meetings and educational activities throughout
the year in different sub specialties. We have a large, web-based
educational platform, where people can access information for
education, training, and certification.
Additionally, we organize and promote five new guidelines each
year for patient management to help clinicians provide better
patient management.
The society also organizes registries with our full registry program
entitled the Euro Observational Research Program (EORP).
Currently, the society has about twenty programs running that
cover the entire field of cardiovascular medicine. The goal of
the registries serves to create a landscape of the cardiovascular
field in Europe and throughout the world. With the registries, we
intend to better understand how well we are preventing disease
and implementing guidelines. These are very powerful tools to
understand how patients are being treated in the real world.
We also do work in advocacy and lobbying with several European
structures such as the European Union as well as the European
Parliament. Our current focus is to get involved in multiple
communities in order to increase awareness of cardiovascular
disease and to help improve cardiovascular management.
In whole, there is a whole set of activities that we do in Europe
and, now, in other parts of the world. We are here in China so that
we can learn from each other to improve the way we treat our
patients and populations.
Clinic: It is great to hear that you contribute to so many
activities. How do you produce innovation in Europe?
How do you support the training of young physicians?
Dr. Pinto: Educating young physicians is another part of our
project. We hope to involve the younger generation at an early
stage so that they may substantially contribute to the society.
In order to do so, we have a program dedicated to young
cardiologists entitled "The Cardiologists of Tomorrow".
In terms of innovation, we work particularly at the central level to
promote innovation in the cardiovascular field in pharmacology

and devices. The ESC also advocates for the need to support
innovation in the cardiovascular field. We advocate that it is
imperative for key decision makers to support innovation in order
to spur further development in the cardiovascular field.
During the past decade, many innovations have occurred in
Europe. I hope this trend will continue to be so prosperous.
However, even so, we must continue to demonstrate the need
to support cardiovascular medicine – both for research and
clinical practice. It is extremely important to continue to support
innovation and research in the cardiovascular field in order to
understand the gaps and unknown areas in the field. This is why
we still have a lot of people who are committed to cardiovascular
disease.
Clinic: As the president of ESC, what do you think is
the next most significant strategy of ESC?
Dr. Pinto: I think that one of the ESC’s main strategic
decisions was to continue to support an increase in awareness of
cardiovascular disease, to continue to support education, and to
have a strong advocacy strategy.
In order to do so, we have developed a five-year strategic plan,
in which we cover five areas – advocacy, education, congresses,
research, and membership. Our main priority remains to ensure
that we provide the best for our members. We are initiating a new
membership process in order to promote closer contact with our
members and engage them in activities of the society.
The society must continue to strengthen our education and
advocacy platforms in order to gain continued support for
our activities and research in the cardiovascular field. Our
ultimate goal is not only for the ESC to stand as one of the main
cardiovascular education providers but to also be the voice of the
the patients and entire cardiovascular community.
Clinic: In the future, will the ESC collaborate more with
China? Is there any detailed strategy or program by
now?
Dr. Pinto: Absolutely; since the establishment of this
cooperation between the ESC and China, our relations have only
grown stronger. We now have a project entitled the Sino-European
College. The College is with five different schools on different
topics including an imaging school, anti-coagulation school,
hypertension school, ischemic heart disease school, PCI school, as
well as a lipid management school. Each school has two chairs –
one Chinese and one European.
The Sino-European College has both joint online and offline
educational activities, which are done partly by Chinese
colleagues and partly by European colleagues. We have also
developed offline courses including European and Chinese
speaker tours that will travel to different campuses in different
cities. The development of these schools has taken place over the
past year. We highly encourage such programs, as our goal is to
ensure the continuation of our relationship with China.
In addition to the Sino-European College, the ESC and CSC have
joint collaboration at one another’s congresses. There are joint
sessions at our congress with your society and here we have had
joint sessions where we present new guidelines and new initiatives
to our Chinese colleagues.
Thus, our relationship with China has been extremely fruitful.

STEMI患者急诊PCI指南》中的亮点进行解读。
本版指南做出了两个十分重大的更新,主要为改变了对
