Richie Hawtin has just released
a new album, From My Mind To
Yours, on Plus 8 Records. While it may
seem sudden, Hawtin has been semi-
secretly gearing up for the release
for the past few months. The first
signs came as a mysterious new Plus
8 12-inch popped up at Berlin's Hard
Wax in October. While Hawtin's camp
claimed to have no knowledge of the
three-track EP, also dubbed From My
Mind To Yours, it bore all the hallmark
sounds of early Plastikman work,
referencing the seminal 1991 Plus 8
compilation From Our Minds To Yours
Vol. 1.
More mystery EPs soon followed. Then
just days ago, Hawtin admitted to
EB.TV that he'd been responsible all
along, telling fans he was "getting back
to basics” and “just having fun” with
the new material, compiled for the
new LP.

Aparty born in Barcelona/
Ibiza in winter 2014, pre-
sented in summer 2015 in Ibi-
za every Friday at Hotel Pacha,
continues the adventure into
England based in the city of Lon-
don for the winter of 2015/16
Its three residents are working
together and will be accompa-
nied by a guest International
DJ at every party, three of them
are already announced, but the-
re will be many more to round
off "IN TIME", a magical London
night.
Stylish underground music and
finally close to the people again
with lots of dancing for everyo-
ne, don't miss this event. Come
and enjoy it with us.
From Blue Parrot in Playa del Carmen with an impressive DJ
producer, perhaps unknown to many, but an icon of techno-
house music, we feel you will think the same ...

Hello how are you Omar?
Very good, thank you !
I am Omar Labastida, Dj since 1994 and producer since 2006,
resident of Blue Parrot and BPM Festival since its 1st edition in
2008 in Playa Del Carmen Mexico and very happy!

We will go on.
When you are live before the public in a session, are you USB
stick or mixtures?
I mix 100% with vinyl starting in the 90's when I was taught to
mix and not to click, anyone can click but not everyone knows
how to create an atmosphere mix which is very different, I
believe.

What is the difference between composing and mixing, if any?
I think that there is a difference.  You can tell a DJ producer by
the way of mixing and the atmosphere it creates which is a super
plus.  If you're a DJ, you can reconcile and blend perfectly fine but
if you're a DJ and producer, composer or musician, you simply
listen to the music in a very different way than the normal
mixes and it is hard to describe, but there is a small difference
between the DJ and the DJ producer because the feeling that
you experience is different!

Your a DJ, you select your own tracks and you also merge with
others in your mixes.  Is that because they are popular or they fit
your style?
I always play my remixes and original tracks so it is perfect for
my set and I produce Tech-House, not all of my set is my
productions as there are other very good sounds in the same
style, which I like and which fit perfectly.

INTERVIEW
14

OMAR LABASTIDA
DJ PRODUCER
You need a DJ. to move a mass audience?
Feeling, soul and most importantly love for the art of DJ'ing,
and if you are not looking for popularity and your main focus is
music, you focus on, and involve the public in your own sphere
and this is the best thing that can happen to a DJ.

Do you think the recognized DJs in the scene are current
enough for them to play their best tracks?
No, definitely not, in the underground scene it is very difficult
and I think we should be open to put the music of many good
producers out there right now.

Do you think that marketing is generally an important basis for
success, for better DJ producer you are?
Yes, it's important, fortunately the underground scene is the
most transparent in that sense and does not sell crap like
the other side, the underground scene is very strong and
appreciative of the innate talent, and I personally appreciate
the recognition of my work.  There are so many unknown
talents who not been given the chance to prove themselves.

This last question is a bit sad as supporting or marketing
should be for all those who deserve it for their career and
quality of their work, we hope that the media in general more
supportive in terms of musical culture and the creation of new
talent.
Omar Thanks for your time and attention in this new project
and we want to follow your progress and confirm that you are
already one of the great international icons in this new BPM
8th edition in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.

Third Party bring you part two of their
long awaited concept, RELEASE.
RELEASE is a brand new event which is
about to smash the clubbing scene. After
selling out in Liverpool in just over a week,
the boys are set to do the same in London,
and where else but Ministry Of Sound.
Committed to making every original cut
as personal as possible, Third Party’s
four-year rise has conjured some notably
accomplished moments. After cutting
their teeth in and around the London club
scene, the two broke out into the public
conscious after releasing “Release”, which
caught the attention of Steve Angello and
led to the production of “Lights”. Alongside
remixing the likes of Kygo, Sigma and Tiesto,
the two have built up an admirable back
catalogue that continues to flourish. Scaling
Spotify playlists, the digital market and
international crowds alike, 2016 is set to be
a stand-out year for the DJ duo, and we can’t
wait to see what they have in store for us
with RELEASE.

to make full use of the system. They’ve been
busy in their studios creating remastered
versions of entire albums just for this show,

"Dolby Atmos allows our patrons to
experience the future of dance music," says
Lohan Presencer, Ministry of Sound's CEO,

Rinse return with Kenny Dope all night long in The
Box.
Brooklyn-born Kenny Dope is one of the most prolific
artists of our generation. He was just 15 when he began
his musical career as a buyer for a local record shop
called WNR Music Centre in Sunset Park, Brooklyn
- to date Kenny has a collection of over 50,000
records. In the late 80’s, Kenny organized a series of
neighbourhood parties under the alias “Masters at
Work”, which was soon to become the name of the
partnership between Kenny and Louie Vega. As the
MAW sound became prominent and pervasive in
the clubs, they became highly sought after by artists
and labels, eventually remixing artists from Michael
Jackson to Madonna... While production and touring
account for most of his time, the last 2 decades Kenny
Dope has had his hands full releasing thousands of
tracks, remixing hundreds of singles, and globetrotting
to DJ all over the world, showing his distinctive ability
for programming superior beats
Kenny Dope will be joined in The Box DJ Haus.
Haus broke into the musical mainstream under the
name of Hot City before launching his own imprint,
the Unknown to the Unknown label, which has since
seen releases from Legowelt, DJ Q, Willie Burns and
more. More recently he’s helped launch several other
labels that orbit UTTU, while releasing madcap house
with DJ Q as Trumpet & Badman.

Judging by our selection for the year's most influential labels,
melody was once again at the forefront of dance music in 2015.
Of course, there's always room at the top for big room techno,
though a hearty slice of jackin' house could be heard right
across clubland, too. Crossover continues to cuddle closer to the
dance floor, and as is so often forgotten in dance music, less can
definitely be more. So without further ado, these are our picks;
1ALAIN FITZPATRICK - RUMOURS_DRUMCODE
Having cultivated a sterling reputation that’s renowned the
world over, Adam Beyer’s imprint has propelled from strength to
strength since it’s inception in 1996. With a signature aesthetic
that represents the best in anthemic, dancefloor-oriented techno
across a multitude of platforms, the Swedish label has overseen a
consistent output of quality releases from heavy hitters like Alan
Fitzpatrick, Joseph Capriati and Nicole Moudaber. The Drumcode
sound has etched itself in underground folklore, remaining one
of the go-to platforms for techno that shows no signs of slowing.
2NINJA TUNE / PORTICO – 101 FEAT. JOE NEWMAN
Experimental, eclectic, revolutionary – As superlatives go,
we’re struggling to think of any that are more suitable when it
comes to describing Ninja Tune. Having been in existence for
a mammoth 25 years, the imprint has stood the test of time,
and continues to set the benchmark by representing the best in
alternative hip-hop, funk and electronica. With typically varied
releases this year from rising stars Dorian Concept, Romare and
Seven Davis Jr as well as label mainstays Bonobo, Jon Hopkins,
Falty DL and Roots Manuva: their output remains at a premium.
The 10 most influential
Record Label of 2015
The 10 most influential
Record Label of 2015
3MACEO PLEX – SOLAR DETROIT (Original Mix)
2015 saw Maceo Plex’s imprint Ellum Audio further stretching
its wings far beyond the label head’s output with a myriad of
big releases from newcomers like Gardens of God, Odd Parents,
WhoMadeWho and Dino Lenny, along with established artists
like Danny Daze and Agoria, whose brilliant Independence EP
was one of the highlights of the year. Though it was still Maceo
Plex’s monumental Solar Detroit EP that remains one of the
label’s key releases for 2015. 2016 will most likely see the
release of Eric Estornel’s highly-anticipated second album, sure
to kickstart another massive year for the label.
4PAMPA – DJ KOZE – XTC
Launched in 2009 by DJ Koze and Marcus Fink, Pampa
Records has gradually become home to some of the most richly
crafted, inspired house music of today. Along with the label
heads, regular output comes by way of Ada, Die Vögel, Nathan
Fake, Isolée and Robag Wruhme. The carefully considered roster,
coupled with a sound that’s as gorgeous as it is playful, has
resulted in a cult-like following despite its minimal output (only
4 EPs this year). Though when those releases include DJ Koze's
massive EP XTC and Axel Boman’s 1979, it’s easy to see why.
5KOMPAT -GUY MANTZUR, ROY ROSENFELD – EPIKA
(KPMPAKT)
Having celebrated its 22nd year as a label in 2015, Kompakt is
downright ancient in dance music years. Though the Michael
Mayer and Wolfgang Voigt run imprint breezed through another
vintage, marking what could be argued as one of the label’s
biggest years yet. Along with a debut Ibiza showcase, hosting
several nights with Kehakuma at Space, Kompakt saw the
sophomore LP from golden boy Kolsch, a massive single from
Guy Mantzur & Roy Rosenfeld with ‘Epika’, and releases from the
likes of Blond:ish, Maceo Plex, Agoria, The Orb, Re. This stalwart
of the German scene isn't going anywhere.
28 29
6DIRTIBIRD – WILL CLARKE – THE BOOGIE WOOGIE
A decade after its launch, Claude VonStroke's label Dirtybird
is still a trendsetter when it comes to funky basslines and filthy
beats. Inspired by funk, hip hop and drum and bass, Dirtybird
has forged an unparalleled sound and has attracted a massive
fan following. The label’s legendary BBQ party series went on the
road this year, bringing sick basslines to six US cities, and they
even staged their hugely successful inaugural Ditybird Campout
festival in SoCal in October. With floor filler releases such as the
label boss’s ‘Barrump’ and ‘Make A Cake’ and Justin Jay’s ‘Rain
Dance’, Dirtybird has been the standout US imprint this year.
7OSTGUT ON – NICK HÖPPNER – COME CLOSER (FOLK-OSTGUT
TON)
Berghain's very own Ostgut Ton has been pushing quality
techno and house for the past 10 years, and 2015 was nothing
less than a victory lap for them. Starting off the year with Nick
Höppner's Folk LP and finishing with Martyn's Falling for You
12'', Ostgut continues to show the world how a label can be wildly
successful while retaining its strict artistic integrity through
passion and curation, proving why the terms “Berghain techno”
and “Panorama Bar house” have etched themselves into the
minds of the masses for good.
8AUS MUSIC – BICEP I JUST
Founded by Sample Records' Will Saul and Ninja Tune artist
Fink, London's Aus Records has no equals in the capital when it
comes to finding a balance between up-and-coming producers
and household names. Their 2015 saw an impressive string of
high quality house and techno: Timothy Blake's promising 'The
Stormy Search', Fold's hard-hitting ‘Netflix And Chill’, Bicep's
90s-leaning ‘Just’, while Youandewan's ‘Spiral Arms’ and Bwana's
‘Flute Dreams’ showed that you can sound tough, quirky and
danceable at the same time.
9DYNAMIC MUSIC – SOLUMON – ZORA (ORIGINAL MIX)
While it seemed last year was quite possibly the Hamburg-
based Diynamic’s biggest year yet, 2015 provided a laundry list of
accomplishments, seeing boss man Solomun and his label spread the
Diy sound across three parties in Ibiza this summer, while throwing
festivals and showcases in far flung locations like Istanbul, as well
as the usual haunts like BPM, Off Week and ADE. On the release
front, we were provided the hair raising album ‘Freedom Wig’ from
the Norwegian duo Ost & Kjex, Thyladomid’s debut LP Interstellar
Destiny, H.O.S.H’s melodic, synth ridden EP, ‘Cilantrophy’ and of
course the release of Solomun's long anticipated ‘Zora.’ With all that,
we can’t wait to see what this sterling imprint comes up with for their
10th anniversary next year.
10HOTFLUSH – SCUBA – BLACK ON BLACK (Len Faki Goes Black
Remix)
In 2009 Scuba told RA that a repetitive rhythm has a strong effect
on some primitive part of the brain, like nothing else does. Six years
later and after 12 years in the business, the Berlin-based label is still
hypnotising clubbers with its poised and nasty techno beats. This
year Scuba’s imprint once again boasts a roster of strong releases,
including the label boss’s fourth album Claustrophobia, alongside
massive EPs by Auden, Paul Woolford, Agoria and Alan Fitzpatrick,
demonstrating the evolution of the Hotflush sound.

One of Greece’s finest exports, Mihalis Safras is
definitely one of it’s most important representatives.
His ‘Material’ label has been one of the standout
imprints of 2015 so far, with releases from the likes
Oxia, ZDS, Volkoder, Mendo, Russ Yallop, Alvaro Smart,
Cristoph, Dale Howard, plus of course the main man
himself.
One of the scene’s most in-demand DJs, Safras has
this year played in some of most notorious venues in
America, Russia and the length and breadth of Europe.
As well as his own Material label, Mihalis has had a
steady steam of releases so far in 2015 on labels like:
VIVa MUSiC’, Glasgow Underground, Definition:Music
and Lapsus to name a few.
With such a body of work so far in 2015, it’s hard to pick
standout moments, but we really loved the ‘Mantela
EP’ on Lapsus, which featured 4 amazingly different
interpretations of the title track. ‘Freedom’ on Glasgow
Underground has been a real floor filler in 2015 so far,
whilst Mihalis’ remix on Dennis Ferrer ‘Transitions’ is
just dripping in tech goodness.
Mihalis Safras has really upped his game so far in 2015
and it’s great to see an artist and label owner really push
the boundaries in terms of creative content and vision.
Don’t sleep on Safras’ 2015 forthcoming releases on

seeing what more he has up his sleeve for the next year

SPRING_SUMMER2015/16
SARAH BURTON has
long been credited as the
light source at McQueen.
In previous seasons it’s
been subtle, like a crack
in a window but bit by bit
that window has widened.
Tonight, it was thrown wide
open.
Her Alexander McQueen
takes a gentler, more
feminine approach and that
was no truer than in her
collection this evening: no
gimp masks, no crazy hair
styling, no set to distract.
What she presented was
a beautiful, much easier
rendering of the McQueen
aesthetic.
The people of London's
Spitalfields from the late 17th
Century and the Huguenot
migrants who arrived as
religious refugees were the
starting point for Burton,
they brought with them a
skill in weaving and floral
design. Those artisanal crafts
were mined to the hilt; along
with a love of folklore and
the idea of heirloom. Fabrics
looked aged and decayed,
from gentle frays in the
surface of washed silk gowns
to jeans with exaggerated
cuffs that were shredded to
the extreme.
It was bohemian in parts,
exotic in others - those
Indian-mirrored ivory
frock coats being the best
example - and above all,
deeply romantic. From the
Victoriana silhouettes with
corseted bodices to the
chintz prints comprising
hand-painted roses and
forget-me-nots, even the
little nappa leather jackets
had floral embroideries and
sprouted tiny ruffles along
the shoulder seams.
There was an undercurrent
of fetishism here but it was
tame and more refined in
its execution; silver chain
harnesses were draped
loosely around the body
over razor-sharp black
tailoring. But if show-goers
were expecting an edge, or
even a hint of agitation, it
didn't materialise. This was
an ultra-romantic version of
the McQueen woman, best
illustrated with the closing
look: a shredded ruffled shell
pink gown suspended by the
skimpiest of spaghetti straps,
and decorated in tiny covered
buttons snaking around the
torso and hips. Sublime...

UNDERGROUND
RICKOWENS
SPRING_SUMMER2016
RIWHILE it was initially distracting to see
models carrying their colleagues upside
down in body harnesses at the Rick Owens
show this afternoon, there was – as we all
knew there would be – a symbolic reason
for it. Ever the contemporary showman,
Owens challenges convention with his
shows to highlight the fundamental message
that he wishes to convey, and today it was
“nourishment, sisterhood and motherhood,
and regeneration”.
Sartorially these idea of birth, of women
being fertile givers of life, found its way past
the cradling harnesses into rich silk gazars
and organzas draped around the body into
creations that were “as close to floral as I’ll
probably ever get,” said Owens, as well as
asymmetric and sculpted proportions that,
like human nature, were imperfect and raw.
It was a departure for Owens, by his own
admission, and one that proved to his critics
that he is no one-trick pony. Calmly sat
front row in a shadowed corner of the Palais
de Tokyo show space watching his crowd
file in, it appeared that Rick Owens was
experiencing a regeneration of his own today.
The move to Soho's Brewer Street car park might have
come as a left-field surprise to some but it was a move
positively embraced by Gareth Pugh, who last season
returned to London having previously had a Paris hiatus.
"The idea of showing in Soho on a Saturday night was
intoxicating," he elaborated in his show notes, likening
the central London spot to a rabbit hole, such was its
effect on him when he first moved to London. And as a
London enfant terrible himself, it simply did seem to be
the perfect fit, music pumping, lights flashing and pennies
beneath our feet as we sat down. Saturday night: the new
going out? It's going to a show, Gareth Pugh's show.
What did he have in store? A troop of bad gals that hailed
from Britain's pleasure piers. Cue faces painted on over
stretch masks, eyeshadow of epic proportions, wig hair to
match; latex leggings, stiletto killer heels; candy stripes
and sequin shorts.
These were wild creatures of the night alright and they
were inviting you for a dance on the disco dance floor.
Do you have your star-shaped shades at the ready? Your
moves ready to break out? Lengths were lean for flares
and jumpsuits, tailoring rendered in leather, and pennies
making for a new take on a standard sequin.
All of that said, this was one of the most wearable
offerings from Pugh yet - his previous nightmare-infused
collections put to bed in favour of a big night out instead.
Let's dance. GARETHPUGHGARETHPUGH

  • 5. www.magxlondon.com 9 Richie Hawtin has just released a new album, From My Mind To Yours, on Plus 8 Records. While it may seem sudden, Hawtin has been semi- secretly gearing up for the release for the past few months. The first signs came as a mysterious new Plus 8 12-inch popped up at Berlin's Hard Wax in October. While Hawtin's camp claimed to have no knowledge of the three-track EP, also dubbed From My Mind To Yours, it bore all the hallmark sounds of early Plastikman work, referencing the seminal 1991 Plus 8 compilation From Our Minds To Yours Vol. 1. More mystery EPs soon followed. Then just days ago, Hawtin admitted to EB.TV that he'd been responsible all along, telling fans he was "getting back to basics” and “just having fun” with the new material, compiled for the new LP.

  • 8. From Blue Parrot in Playa del Carmen with an impressive DJ producer, perhaps unknown to many, but an icon of techno- house music, we feel you will think the same ...   Hello how are you Omar? Very good, thank you ! I am Omar Labastida, Dj since 1994 and producer since 2006, resident of Blue Parrot and BPM Festival since its 1st edition in 2008 in Playa Del Carmen Mexico and very happy!   We will go on. When you are live before the public in a session, are you USB stick or mixtures? I mix 100% with vinyl starting in the 90's when I was taught to mix and not to click, anyone can click but not everyone knows how to create an atmosphere mix which is very different, I believe.   What is the difference between composing and mixing, if any? I think that there is a difference.  You can tell a DJ producer by the way of mixing and the atmosphere it creates which is a super plus.  If you're a DJ, you can reconcile and blend perfectly fine but if you're a DJ and producer, composer or musician, you simply listen to the music in a very different way than the normal mixes and it is hard to describe, but there is a small difference between the DJ and the DJ producer because the feeling that you experience is different!   Your a DJ, you select your own tracks and you also merge with others in your mixes.  Is that because they are popular or they fit your style? I always play my remixes and original tracks so it is perfect for my set and I produce Tech-House, not all of my set is my productions as there are other very good sounds in the same style, which I like and which fit perfectly. • 9. INTERVIEW www.magxlondon.com OMAR LABASTIDA DJ PRODUCER You need a DJ. to move a mass audience? Feeling, soul and most importantly love for the art of DJ'ing, and if you are not looking for popularity and your main focus is music, you focus on, and involve the public in your own sphere and this is the best thing that can happen to a DJ.   Do you think the recognized DJs in the scene are current enough for them to play their best tracks? No, definitely not, in the underground scene it is very difficult and I think we should be open to put the music of many good producers out there right now.   Do you think that marketing is generally an important basis for success, for better DJ producer you are? Yes, it's important, fortunately the underground scene is the most transparent in that sense and does not sell crap like the other side, the underground scene is very strong and appreciative of the innate talent, and I personally appreciate the recognition of my work.  There are so many unknown talents who not been given the chance to prove themselves.   This last question is a bit sad as supporting or marketing should be for all those who deserve it for their career and quality of their work, we hope that the media in general more supportive in terms of musical culture and the creation of new talent. Omar Thanks for your time and attention in this new project and we want to follow your progress and confirm that you are already one of the great international icons in this new BPM 8th edition in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. 16

  • 12. www.magxlondon.com Third Party bring you part two of their long awaited concept, RELEASE. RELEASE is a brand new event which is about to smash the clubbing scene. After selling out in Liverpool in just over a week, the boys are set to do the same in London, and where else but Ministry Of Sound. Committed to making every original cut as personal as possible, Third Party’s four-year rise has conjured some notably accomplished moments. After cutting their teeth in and around the London club scene, the two broke out into the public conscious after releasing “Release”, which caught the attention of Steve Angello and led to the production of “Lights”. Alongside remixing the likes of Kygo, Sigma and Tiesto, the two have built up an admirable back catalogue that continues to flourish. Scaling Spotify playlists, the digital market and international crowds alike, 2016 is set to be a stand-out year for the DJ duo, and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us with RELEASE. ULTRASOUND Never before experienced within club culture 'Ultrasound' is a one-off showcase of the brand new 60-speaker, 22-channel Dolby Atmos sound system newly installed at the world-famous Ministry of Sound. Atmos allows sounds to be panned between speakers to create an exciting, all surrounding 3D audio experience. We’re very proud to have London Elektricity, Reso and TC as the first artists in the world to make full use of the system. They’ve been busy in their studios creating remastered versions of entire albums just for this show, get ready for an experience unlike anything ever heard before within dance music!  "Dolby Atmos allows our patrons to experience the future of dance music," says Lohan Presencer, Ministry of Sound's CEO, "creating multidimensional soundscapes the likes of which have never been heard before in a nightclub environment. • 13. Rinse return with Kenny Dope all night long in The Box.  Brooklyn-born Kenny Dope is one of the most prolific artists of our generation. He was just 15 when he began his musical career as a buyer for a local record shop called WNR Music Centre in Sunset Park, Brooklyn - to date Kenny has a collection of over 50,000 records. In the late 80’s, Kenny organized a series of neighbourhood parties under the alias “Masters at Work”, which was soon to become the name of the partnership between Kenny and Louie Vega. As the MAW sound became prominent and pervasive in the clubs, they became highly sought after by artists and labels, eventually remixing artists from Michael Jackson to Madonna... While production and touring account for most of his time, the last 2 decades Kenny Dope has had his hands full releasing thousands of tracks, remixing hundreds of singles, and globetrotting to DJ all over the world, showing his distinctive ability for programming superior beats Kenny Dope will be joined in The Box DJ Haus. Haus broke into the musical mainstream under the name of Hot City before launching his own imprint, the Unknown to the Unknown label, which has since seen releases from Legowelt, DJ Q, Willie Burns and more. More recently he’s helped launch several other labels that orbit UTTU, while releasing madcap house with DJ Q as Trumpet & Badman. • 15. Judging by our selection for the year's most influential labels, melody was once again at the forefront of dance music in 2015. Of course, there's always room at the top for big room techno, though a hearty slice of jackin' house could be heard right across clubland, too. Crossover continues to cuddle closer to the dance floor, and as is so often forgotten in dance music, less can definitely be more. So without further ado, these are our picks; 1ALAIN FITZPATRICK - RUMOURS_DRUMCODE Having cultivated a sterling reputation that’s renowned the world over, Adam Beyer’s imprint has propelled from strength to strength since it’s inception in 1996. With a signature aesthetic that represents the best in anthemic, dancefloor-oriented techno across a multitude of platforms, the Swedish label has overseen a consistent output of quality releases from heavy hitters like Alan Fitzpatrick, Joseph Capriati and Nicole Moudaber. The Drumcode sound has etched itself in underground folklore, remaining one of the go-to platforms for techno that shows no signs of slowing. 2NINJA TUNE / PORTICO – 101 FEAT. JOE NEWMAN Experimental, eclectic, revolutionary – As superlatives go, we’re struggling to think of any that are more suitable when it comes to describing Ninja Tune. Having been in existence for a mammoth 25 years, the imprint has stood the test of time, and continues to set the benchmark by representing the best in alternative hip-hop, funk and electronica. With typically varied releases this year from rising stars Dorian Concept, Romare and Seven Davis Jr as well as label mainstays Bonobo, Jon Hopkins, Falty DL and Roots Manuva: their output remains at a premium. The 10 most influential Record Label of 2015 The 10 most influential Record Label of 2015 3MACEO PLEX – SOLAR DETROIT (Original Mix) 2015 saw Maceo Plex’s imprint Ellum Audio further stretching its wings far beyond the label head’s output with a myriad of big releases from newcomers like Gardens of God, Odd Parents, WhoMadeWho and Dino Lenny, along with established artists like Danny Daze and Agoria, whose brilliant Independence EP was one of the highlights of the year. Though it was still Maceo Plex’s monumental Solar Detroit EP that remains one of the label’s key releases for 2015. 2016 will most likely see the release of Eric Estornel’s highly-anticipated second album, sure to kickstart another massive year for the label. 4PAMPA – DJ KOZE – XTC Launched in 2009 by DJ Koze and Marcus Fink, Pampa Records has gradually become home to some of the most richly crafted, inspired house music of today. Along with the label heads, regular output comes by way of Ada, Die Vögel, Nathan Fake, Isolée and Robag Wruhme. The carefully considered roster, coupled with a sound that’s as gorgeous as it is playful, has resulted in a cult-like following despite its minimal output (only 4 EPs this year). Though when those releases include DJ Koze's massive EP XTC and Axel Boman’s 1979, it’s easy to see why. 5KOMPAT -GUY MANTZUR, ROY ROSENFELD – EPIKA (KPMPAKT) Having celebrated its 22nd year as a label in 2015, Kompakt is downright ancient in dance music years. Though the Michael Mayer and Wolfgang Voigt run imprint breezed through another vintage, marking what could be argued as one of the label’s biggest years yet. Along with a debut Ibiza showcase, hosting several nights with Kehakuma at Space, Kompakt saw the sophomore LP from golden boy Kolsch, a massive single from Guy Mantzur & Roy Rosenfeld with ‘Epika’, and releases from the likes of Blond:ish, Maceo Plex, Agoria, The Orb, Re. This stalwart of the German scene isn't going anywhere. 28 29
  • 16. 6DIRTIBIRD – WILL CLARKE – THE BOOGIE WOOGIE A decade after its launch, Claude VonStroke's label Dirtybird is still a trendsetter when it comes to funky basslines and filthy beats. Inspired by funk, hip hop and drum and bass, Dirtybird has forged an unparalleled sound and has attracted a massive fan following. The label’s legendary BBQ party series went on the road this year, bringing sick basslines to six US cities, and they even staged their hugely successful inaugural Ditybird Campout festival in SoCal in October. With floor filler releases such as the label boss’s ‘Barrump’ and ‘Make A Cake’ and Justin Jay’s ‘Rain Dance’, Dirtybird has been the standout US imprint this year. 7OSTGUT ON – NICK HÖPPNER – COME CLOSER (FOLK-OSTGUT TON) Berghain's very own Ostgut Ton has been pushing quality techno and house for the past 10 years, and 2015 was nothing less than a victory lap for them. Starting off the year with Nick Höppner's Folk LP and finishing with Martyn's Falling for You 12'', Ostgut continues to show the world how a label can be wildly successful while retaining its strict artistic integrity through passion and curation, proving why the terms “Berghain techno” and “Panorama Bar house” have etched themselves into the minds of the masses for good. 8AUS MUSIC – BICEP I JUST Founded by Sample Records' Will Saul and Ninja Tune artist Fink, London's Aus Records has no equals in the capital when it comes to finding a balance between up-and-coming producers and household names. Their 2015 saw an impressive string of high quality house and techno: Timothy Blake's promising 'The Stormy Search', Fold's hard-hitting ‘Netflix And Chill’, Bicep's 90s-leaning ‘Just’, while Youandewan's ‘Spiral Arms’ and Bwana's ‘Flute Dreams’ showed that you can sound tough, quirky and danceable at the same time. 9DYNAMIC MUSIC – SOLUMON – ZORA (ORIGINAL MIX) While it seemed last year was quite possibly the Hamburg- based Diynamic’s biggest year yet, 2015 provided a laundry list of accomplishments, seeing boss man Solomun and his label spread the Diy sound across three parties in Ibiza this summer, while throwing festivals and showcases in far flung locations like Istanbul, as well as the usual haunts like BPM, Off Week and ADE. On the release front, we were provided the hair raising album ‘Freedom Wig’ from the Norwegian duo Ost & Kjex, Thyladomid’s debut LP Interstellar Destiny, H.O.S.H’s melodic, synth ridden EP, ‘Cilantrophy’ and of course the release of Solomun's long anticipated ‘Zora.’ With all that, we can’t wait to see what this sterling imprint comes up with for their 10th anniversary next year. 10HOTFLUSH – SCUBA – BLACK ON BLACK (Len Faki Goes Black Remix) In 2009 Scuba told RA that a repetitive rhythm has a strong effect on some primitive part of the brain, like nothing else does. Six years later and after 12 years in the business, the Berlin-based label is still hypnotising clubbers with its poised and nasty techno beats. This year Scuba’s imprint once again boasts a roster of strong releases, including the label boss’s fourth album Claustrophobia, alongside massive EPs by Auden, Paul Woolford, Agoria and Alan Fitzpatrick, demonstrating the evolution of the Hotflush sound.    www.magxlondon.com 30

  • 19. One of Greece’s finest exports, Mihalis Safras is definitely one of it’s most important representatives. His ‘Material’ label has been one of the standout imprints of 2015 so far, with releases from the likes Oxia, ZDS, Volkoder, Mendo, Russ Yallop, Alvaro Smart, Cristoph, Dale Howard, plus of course the main man himself. One of the scene’s most in-demand DJs, Safras has this year played in some of most notorious venues in America, Russia and the length and breadth of Europe. As well as his own Material label, Mihalis has had a steady steam of releases so far in 2015 on labels like: VIVa MUSiC’, Glasgow Underground, Definition:Music and Lapsus to name a few. With such a body of work so far in 2015, it’s hard to pick standout moments, but we really loved the ‘Mantela EP’ on Lapsus, which featured 4 amazingly different interpretations of the title track. ‘Freedom’ on Glasgow Underground has been a real floor filler in 2015 so far, whilst Mihalis’ remix on Dennis Ferrer ‘Transitions’ is just dripping in tech goodness. Mihalis Safras has really upped his game so far in 2015 and it’s great to see an artist and label owner really push the boundaries in terms of creative content and vision. Don’t sleep on Safras’ 2015 forthcoming releases on Saved and Knee Deep in Sounds. We look forward to seeing what more he has up his sleeve for the next year 2016. www.magxlondon.com MIHALIS SAFRAS 36
  • 22. ALEXANDERMCQUEENALEXANDERMCQUEEN SPRING_SUMMER2015/16 SARAH BURTON has long been credited as the light source at McQueen. In previous seasons it’s been subtle, like a crack in a window but bit by bit that window has widened. Tonight, it was thrown wide open. Her Alexander McQueen takes a gentler, more feminine approach and that was no truer than in her collection this evening: no gimp masks, no crazy hair styling, no set to distract. What she presented was a beautiful, much easier rendering of the McQueen aesthetic. The people of London's Spitalfields from the late 17th Century and the Huguenot migrants who arrived as religious refugees were the starting point for Burton, they brought with them a skill in weaving and floral design. Those artisanal crafts were mined to the hilt; along with a love of folklore and the idea of heirloom. Fabrics looked aged and decayed, from gentle frays in the surface of washed silk gowns to jeans with exaggerated cuffs that were shredded to the extreme. It was bohemian in parts, exotic in others - those Indian-mirrored ivory frock coats being the best example - and above all, deeply romantic. From the Victoriana silhouettes with corseted bodices to the chintz prints comprising hand-painted roses and forget-me-nots, even the little nappa leather jackets had floral embroideries and sprouted tiny ruffles along the shoulder seams. There was an undercurrent of fetishism here but it was tame and more refined in its execution; silver chain harnesses were draped loosely around the body over razor-sharp black tailoring. But if show-goers were expecting an edge, or even a hint of agitation, it didn't materialise. This was an ultra-romantic version of the McQueen woman, best illustrated with the closing look: a shredded ruffled shell pink gown suspended by the skimpiest of spaghetti straps, and decorated in tiny covered buttons snaking around the torso and hips. Sublime... www.magxlondon.com 42 43
  • 24. 46 www.magxlondon.com UNDERGROUND RICKOWENS SPRING_SUMMER2016 RIWHILE it was initially distracting to see models carrying their colleagues upside down in body harnesses at the Rick Owens show this afternoon, there was – as we all knew there would be – a symbolic reason for it. Ever the contemporary showman, Owens challenges convention with his shows to highlight the fundamental message that he wishes to convey, and today it was “nourishment, sisterhood and motherhood, and regeneration”. Sartorially these idea of birth, of women being fertile givers of life, found its way past the cradling harnesses into rich silk gazars and organzas draped around the body into creations that were “as close to floral as I’ll probably ever get,” said Owens, as well as asymmetric and sculpted proportions that, like human nature, were imperfect and raw. It was a departure for Owens, by his own admission, and one that proved to his critics that he is no one-trick pony. Calmly sat front row in a shadowed corner of the Palais de Tokyo show space watching his crowd file in, it appeared that Rick Owens was experiencing a regeneration of his own today.
  • 25. The move to Soho's Brewer Street car park might have come as a left-field surprise to some but it was a move positively embraced by Gareth Pugh, who last season returned to London having previously had a Paris hiatus. "The idea of showing in Soho on a Saturday night was intoxicating," he elaborated in his show notes, likening the central London spot to a rabbit hole, such was its effect on him when he first moved to London. And as a London enfant terrible himself, it simply did seem to be the perfect fit, music pumping, lights flashing and pennies beneath our feet as we sat down. Saturday night: the new going out? It's going to a show, Gareth Pugh's show. What did he have in store? A troop of bad gals that hailed from Britain's pleasure piers. Cue faces painted on over stretch masks, eyeshadow of epic proportions, wig hair to match; latex leggings, stiletto killer heels; candy stripes and sequin shorts. These were wild creatures of the night alright and they were inviting you for a dance on the disco dance floor. Do you have your star-shaped shades at the ready? Your moves ready to break out? Lengths were lean for flares and jumpsuits, tailoring rendered in leather, and pennies making for a new take on a standard sequin. VERSUS _ VERSACE SPRING SUMMER_2016 COLLECTION With spring-summer 2016 marking Anthony Vaccarello’s second official season as Versus by Versace’s creative director, the Belgian designer went full on rock roll for the London Fashion Week showing. The collection is currently on sale now, bringing a unique spin to the spring lineup which honed in on a dark, mostly black palette. Cool girl staples including leather shorts, body con dresses and bomber jackets were worn by models including Erin Wasson, Taylor Hill and Constance Jablonski. Military-inspired buttons decorated a few of the jackets while dark floral blooms adorned other designs for an attitude-filled selection. www.magxlondon.com 54
