What is Important?What is Important?
• Know your Soils and Traffic
• Select the Appropriate Surfacing Standard
• Use Appropriate Aggregate Gradation
• Consider In-place Soil Stabilization
• Use Cost-Effective Local Materials
• Use Adequate Q C /Sampling & Testing
• Compact your Soils and Aggregates
• Drain your Materials
• Develop Quarries…then Reclaim Them
Editor's Notes
Hydrated tubular halloysite is the predominant soil mineral in Babeldaob soils. This mineral releases water when pressure is applied, creating a sloppy mess. This characteristic is referred to as “low soil strength” in the soil survey. Ngaard State, Babeldaob Island.
As with sheepsfoot can increase applied pressure with additional weight in boxes (dirt versus concrete blocks, etc)
Grid pattern typically 6” openings
The bars “captures” the larger rock and then pushes them down to be either crushed or pushed into the surrounding material
Typically used on granular material (shot rock or pit run)
