9. Context/site
London underground is the chosen location for my
design proposal. The environment is vulnerable due to a
heavy dependence on the artificial system.

12. Underground as bomb shelter
The underground carried out more functions then what it
was initially designed for, as can be seen in this paintings
by Henry Moore.
We can see how entire communities had to live
underground, an environment which may have caused
sever respiratory issues due to high co2 concentration.

GROWTH
•When the conditions for the algae can be meet the algae is then

•This stage is carried out by a piece of cloth. The thickness of the cloths is

18. Algae production stages
In the growing stage of the algae
culture it is important to ensure that
all conditions are meet.
During the filtration stage the algae
is completely separated from the
fertilizers.
Finally the algae is ready to be
consumed!

18
19. Primary Conditioning
Light is crucial in the process of
photosynthesis and thus is directly
related to the oxygen production.
Algae can survive in extreme habitats
nevertheless there is an optimal
temperature were they perform best.
With the help of the ph test algae to
fertilizers ratio can be detected,
identifying the moment to add dosage
19
20. The map above illustrates people
concentration density which is closely
related to co2 production rate.
The Paddlewheel carries out the
same function as the air pump. It is
used for out door algae farms.
Secondary Conditioning
Air pumps function is to eliminate
oxygen from the algae culture which
in excess can intoxicate it.

21. Algae in the studio
“On average , the biomass contained 37.6% (w / w ) of available
carbohydrate , 28.8 % crude protein and 18.4 % of total lipids .
Mineral 100 grams of dry biomass were as follows : Ca ( 972 mg ), K (
533 mg ), Na ( 659 mg ), Mg ( 316 mg) Zn ( 103 mg ), Fe ( 136 mg ),
Mn (3,4 mg ), Cu (35,0 mg) Ni (0,22 mg) and Co ( < 0.1 mg). Toxic
heavy metals content (Cd and Pb) were insignificant. Fatty acid
content was as follows ( On a dry weight percentage ) : 0.6 % 14 : 0
5.0 % 16 : 0; 4.7 % 16 : 1omega7, 3.8 % from 18 : 1omega9, 0.4 %
from 18 : 2omega6; 0.7 % 20 : 4omega6, and 2.2 % 20 : 5omega3.”
21
23. Underground research
Algae can not be stagnant for too long!, since the levels
of oxygen will eventually rise. The frequency of train
arrivals can be key in the ventilation of the oxygen.
Abundance of wind flowing through both of the
platforms and the entrance of the underground can
make this specific site location more attractive.
23
26. Wind in the platform
As can be seen from the video above the wind turbine reacts accordingly to the
approaching carriages. The function of this process is to extract the oxygen from
the algae culture, I previously mentioned the potential risk of oxygen excess.

The image on the left shows the direction of the air flow in the underground.
This can be identified by understanding the side from which the carriages are
approaching to the platform.

Light is essential for algae survival, we can see two
potential locations that have this specifications, inside of
the carriage and above the platform.

31. The history of the graphic content in the underground has been very popular
through out the years. This concept is based on using the posters as means to
communicate the purpose of algae in underground application.

34. Site locating
A optimal algae and oxygen production can only be
achieved by providing abundance of light (REF-page19).
More oxygen can be achieved in this location, however it
is unnecessary and technically more challenging.
34
35. It is important to note of the existing ventilation system. For efficient design
the algae should be integrated into the system.

36. The valve is located in the forefront and back end of the carriages rather then in every carriage this
considerably diminishes the time of collecting and feeding the algae culture.

36
37. The carriages will turn while transiting through the underground therefore it is important to consider
the tension that might build up between the carriages. Material can be one way to handle this issue.

Reflecting filter
Reflecting filter is a material which allows the penetration of light. Its reflective
qualities trap the light inside the algae container maximising growth rate. It’s a
ability to obscure the algae can make it attractive for esthetical applications.
42. The variations of red to green colour palettes illustrate the type of air content.
Red signifies high concentration of co2 where as green signifies high
concentration of oxygen.

44. Once again, green to red colour palate signifies a particular oxygen to co2
concentration ratios. The algae produces the oxygen which is dispersed
