ALL ABOUT THE
Netherlands
Student Visa
The Netherlands, also commonly known as Holland, is one of the most sought-after
destinations for international students. Situated in Europe, alongside prominent
countries such as Germany and Belgium, Holland is famous for its impeccable education
system especially, its management, business, engineering, and technology programs.
To begin with, the tuition fees in the Netherlands for international students don’t go
through the roof, thanks to government subsidies. It also attracts a diversity of students
from several countries, including China, Italy, France, Belgium, and Spain.
The cost of living in the Netherlands is also fairly reasonable, especially in comparison to
the UK and France. Another rationale in favor of studying there is that the Netherlands’
university rankings are constantly improving. A degree completed from a Dutch institute
will have a worth all around the world. This guide aims to provide information about all
the requirements and details about the Netherlands student visa.
Introduction
It is the responsibility of Netherlands universities to apply for a visa on the student's
behalf. hence, international students are required to pay 172 EUR visa processing fees
at the time of enrollment.
1) Schengen Visa
A Schengen Visa is one of the most common visas in the world. This visa allows
individuals to travel across the Schengen countries for up to 90 days. The Schengen
Area contains 26 countries in Europe such as Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, the
Netherlands, France, Spain, Denmark, and 19 others.
All the students who plan on studying in the Netherlands for less than 3 months need
to have a Schengen Visa.
2) Long term student visa
A student visa in the Netherlands is referred to as a residence permit (VRV) and
required for admission to full-time masters and bachelors programs. Non-EU students
also need an entry residence permit (MVV) to study in this country.
Types of student visa
The Netherlands government mandates that all international students obtain the
50% of the total credits required for the program. If the students fail to do so, their
residence permit will not be renewed.
On your student visa, you can study as well as work part-time as a student. The
maximum duration you’re allowed to work is 16 hours per week during active
schooling time. During the summer holidays, you are allowed to have full-time
employment.
If students want to be self-employed, they can do so after registering with the
Dutch Chamber of Commerce.
The standard time for the processing of the Dutch student visa aka MVV
(Provisional Residence Permit) is about 30 days. However, it may take longer than
that so, students are advised to start their process as soon as possible.
In this document, we’ve mainly covered the prominent facts and information about
the general student visa for the Netherlands. The primary reason for this is that it's
the most commonly chosen option by students.
So, before we move on to the application process and other details, here are a few
important facts you should know:
Important facts
Applying to the Dutch universities and getting an admit is only the first step albeit,
a large one. Once the confirmation letter from the university is in hand, students
should apply to the Dutch student visa as soon as possible. Here are the most
important documents students require:
1) Tuberculosis screening certificate
2) Financial proof that shows you have enough money to support yourself and pay
for your course(Tuition fee cost + The cost of living which is €900 per month, as
stipulated by the Dutch government).
3) Confirmation of Admission from a Dutch University
4) Academic Certificates and transcripts
5) English language proficiency test (IELTS) scores
6) Health insurance proof for the first three months of your stay in the Netherlands
7) Original birth certificate
8) Proof of parental or other legal guardian consent if you’re under 18
9) Your valid passport
10) Work Experience Certificates, if applicable
11) Proof of payment of fees, if applicable
Documents required
To apply for a student visa, you need to do a whole lot of homework. In fact, applying
for a visa is one of the last few steps of studying in the Netherlands as an international
student. Here we have given you a quick and general round-up of the things that you
need to take care of before applying for your visa:
1) Pick your course and university
Before your visa process can even begin, you need to start off by picking the course or
program you want to pursue, and then, based on your program choice, you can
search for the universities offering degrees in that particular discipline. Ensure that
you are applying to a full-time bachelors or masters program at a university which is
registered in the list of Public Register of Recognised Sponsors.
2) Get your documents in order
All students need to ensure that every document being submitted to the university
and the visa authorities is legalized and translated in Dutch, English, French, or
German. Make sure you finish all the documentation and paperwork as mandated by
the university.
3) Visa fees and health insurance
Once you have finished your documentation with the university, make sure you
finalize your health insurance as mandated by the Dutch government. You need to
carry the proof of a negative tuberculosis result and after you receive your visa, you
need to ensure that you make an appointment with the Area Health Authority (GGD)
within 3 months after receiving a residence permit.
Afterward, you need to pay the visa fee and once you get a confirmation from the
consulate/ embassy, make an appointment with them and appear for your visa
interview.
How to apply for the Dutch
student visa?
4) Getting the MVV and VRV
The Dutch university you choose will be the one responsible for applying for both-
your student entry permit (MVV) and Temporary Residence Permit (VRV). Once
your permits have been approved, your university will convey the same to you. The
standard processing duration ranges between 30 to 90 days.
After approval, you can use your passport as identification and collect your MVV and
VRV as and when they are ready, from the Dutch Embassy near you. These permits
allow you to travel and live in the Netherlands and need to be collected within 3
months of the date of issue.
After the completion of your program, students can extend their stay in the
Netherlands for up to 12 months. All they need to do is to change the status of their
visa from student to work visa. They may also require to get a permit.
The type of work permit students need depends upon the level of education they
have completed at a university in the Netherlands. If students have completed a
bachelor’s or Master’s program, they do not require a work permit. They are allowed
to have 12 months of stay back which is also called a 'Search year'. All students need
to do is follow the government guidelines to change the status of their study
permit.
Post-study work visa
