Creative Process of Creating "Moving to Space"
1. Moving To Space
Dante Hayes engaging in the creative process for Professor Nordell’s
Cultivating Creativity Course...
2. Why?
- What originally caught my eye and made me choose the topic of migration was the tag-line,
which is written below...
- Migration: When Home Won’t Let You Stay: Migration Through Contemporary Art
- The part that stood out to me to most is the wording of “When home won’t let you stay...”
Home is the place where you should feel most safe and comfortable.
- What does that tell me?
- These peoples art pieces stem from the movement away from someone's, or something's,
movement away from their place of origin. Some are very deep and thought provoking, and
show us the darkness of the world. Like “Border Patrol Target Range” from Richard Misrach.
3. Why?... Continued
- With all of this information I decided that I wanted to create a piece rooted in the theme of
migration away from the home, within the realm of the art I saw. What inspired me most though, is
what I didn’t see!
- The pieces in the presentation all stayed away from the idea of migration outside of this world...
- Outer Space
- It is very seldom that you see fine, “high class” art based in space. So, with the freedoms bestowed
upon me being a student and not a fine artist I feel the need to push the boundaries a bit even if it
isn’t conventional.
4. Setting the Scene...
- Constant pollution and destruction of the
planet has finally caught up with us. It is now
the time to send out astronauts to find a new
planet to live on. While on this journey who
knows what the astronauts will encounter.
Oh no!
In the creation of this piece I will be using watercolor paints on a small piece of watercolor paper and
printing linocut stamps onto of 3 symbols onto the piece.
5. Search For Inspiration...
Setting...
- When I began thinking of this project I felt like I should get
reference for what it looks like in outer space. If I am going
to paint our potential new home it should be accurate
Options...
- Usually when talks of a new planet come
about people say we should go to mars. I
think visually it is more interesting and
challenging to make the planet with rings
though, so I’ll be doing that
Watercolor galaxy painting
6. Sketches...
To begin, I identified 3 things, that can
be drawn/identifiable, that I feel help tell
this story of migration visually.
- Potential New Planets
- An ETLF
- And a Rocket Ship
10. Final Test Prints...
Before moving
on to printing my
stamps onto the
painting I
wanted to have a
better grasp of
how to get
cleaner and
bolder prints. So
I practiced again
before
completing the
piece.
