In the movie, The Freedom Writers Mrs. Erin Gruwell (Hillary Swank) plays a role of a dedicated teacher who did all she could, to help her students
learn to respect themselves and each other. She has little idea of what she's getting into when she volunteers to be an English teacher at a newly
integrated high school in Long Beach, California. Her students were divided along racial lines and had few aspirations beyond basic survival. Mrs.

They were stories of broken and dysfunctional homes, being kicked out of the house for being part of a gang, to being beaten up just because they
were different. Reading these journals Mrs. "G" realized how similar each student's stories were no matter the race, ethnicity or gender. Even though the
students did not see eye to eye, they all had many things in common: they were all in gangs; they each had their own stories to tell; each student has
dealt with the shooting of a friend, each student want to communicate to others, and each student wanted to be respected.
Upon realizing all of the similarities between each student, Mrs. "G" then began to strive for her students to realize this too, so she comes up with a
"line game" for the students. She places a line on the floor with tape and the students walk to the line when the question that Mrs. "G" asks applies to
them. At first she asks silly questions like "How many of you have the new Snoop Dogg album?" or "How many of you have seen Boyz n the hood?"
but as the game goes on she begins to ask more serious questions like "How many of you have lost a friend to gang violence?" when every single
student steps up to the line for each question they begin to realize that beneath their race their ethnicity and affiliation to a gang, that as teenagers they
are a lot alike, with many of the same experiences.

Prison life can be harsh, and time spent in a isolation is even worse. A majority of those in prison spend countless hours in idleness. It would be much
better if they used that time to reeducate themselves for a productive life on the outside. Some of the prisoners have serious emotional and mental
problems that are never addressed and it is illogical to not attempt to correct these problems before they are released.
There are even worse scenarios that exist in today's prisons. The prison guards have little control and prison can be a violent place because again it
is not a place that specializes in rehab. On television shows you see inmates stabbing each other and are quick to assume that it is a dramatization,
but it really an occurrence that happens often, in prisons all over the world for that matter. In an article by Raphael Rowe he writes about how a part
of him died in prison, and he had to be on his guard constantly, "Once, I was sitting in the television room watching football when someone I knew
came in and told me to leave the room. I didn't ask questions: I just left and stood outside. A few seconds later, three other guys came running past me,
pillow–cases with eye–holes cut out over their heads, carrying a huge cooking pot full of hot oil. I heard the screams long before some young black
guy – a sex offender – came running out, his skin dripping from his face." Such horrid tales should let the general public know that we need to

In Nabokov's 1948 "Good Readers and Good Writers," the reader has the opportunity to view the possibilities of a beautiful collision of a major
reader and a major writer. This piece discusses reading and writing: skills that have become standardized and slightly devalued as education has
advanced. Literacy has become so expected that little thought is put into what defines a good reader or writer; Nabokov tackles this idea head on.
Nabokov's intention of this piece is to passionately display a relationship that is formed between a good reader and a good writer, and the essential

Instead Nabokov states: "study that new world as closely as possible, approaching it as something brand new, having no obvious connection with the
worlds we already know" (1). When approached in such a manner a major reader can see the new world in its entirety and once it has been explored
and understood then there is room to compare its connections to other worlds and knowledge.
Nabokov uses bold and unafraid language to emphasize his thoughts and chooses to speak only to those who choose to listen. The lesson he teaches
requires the audience to look past personal comparison and preference. The audience must gain understand and appreciate first; then let Nabokov's
ideas apply to the world of reading and writing they themselves know it. Nabokov displays this message by refusing to dull any of his thoughts: for
example phrases like, "Can anybody be so naive as to think he or she can learn anything about the past from those... historical novels?" (1). He still
has a definite message but in a lot of sentences and phrases they have a condescending punch to them. Nabokov uses superlatives such as: "the best
temperament for a reader to have..." (3). As well as opinionated statements such as: "nothing is more boring or more unfair..." (1). Statements like these

worked out in the end and they depicted happy, perfect lives. As the Depression raged on, movies were a distraction from the wear and tear of normal
life. With the movie Freedom Writers, however, that is not the case. Freedom Writers tells the impossibly true story of a first
–year teacher, Erin
Gruwell, and the difficulties she faced in her classroom of supposed hopeless cases. In Long Beach, California, her students dealt with gang violence,

Summary Of Should Writer's Use They Own English
Using dialect in society is natural and people can often not control how they sound. When that same person writes however they are expected to
drop their dialect and only use proper english. Vershawn Ashanti Young discusses this topic in his article "Should Writer's Use They Own
English?". Young has several good points including that their accent comes through their writing and that "code meshing" can be effective in a
person's' writing. On the contrary, I agree more with the fact that we need a "universal" way of speaking in America, because of the fact that it is
harder to learn several "languages" as a child and it would be almost impossible for people from other countries to learn all the slang if we don't have

In "One Writer's Beginnings," by Eudora Welty, a short story writer. She recalls early experiences of her interest in books that later impacted her craft

The students in this movie all feel confined to their race. Every race has a different stereotype and in this movie the children feel as if they are

Erin's view seems to be that if enough effort is put into educating students they will not revert back to crime in later years. Thing strong opinion
contrasts considerably with the view of Margaret, who shows woe when commenting on voluntary integration. Margaret seems wary when noticing
Erin's overwhelming optimism towards her troublesome students; students Margaret considers to be intractable. Margaret goes on to warn Erin not to
wear her pearl necklace to class but despite this warning, Erin wears it around the school constantly. This symbolizes the trust Erin has in her students
and her abilities to teach her students right from wrong. This is an example of the film technique of specific dialogue which was used in the film.
This concept is expanded later when Erin requests that Margaret give the children in her class proper books and resources. Her request is met with
an apathetic response that due to the nature of the children in her class, the students would have to use the inexpensive booklets they were
accustomed to. In reaction to this, Erin takes on two more occupations in order to finance the expenses of correct books herself. This action shows us
the high regard Erin has for proper pedagogical material and for education in general. Margaret, on the other hand, does not consider that the children
may benefit from utilising proper books if given the chance and that giving them booklets can be interpreted as a degrading act.

Personal Essay: Why Do Writers Write?
Why do writers write? Like Stephen King said, it's not for the money, and it's definitely not for the fame. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't turn down a

Authors use violence to portray many different things while they write books. Violence adds shock to readers which makes them want to

A Writer's Reflection Essay
English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing
because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a
considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To
put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the

An aspect that I often struggle with is proper punctuation. Truthfully, I do not know how to correctly use punctuation. When writing, I place
punctuation by mimicking authors' formats or by placing them where it feels right. This is present in all of my writing, but I am attempting to improve.
Punctuation also plays a part in another weakness of mine, one that is most likely present within this essay. Since middle school, it was engrained in
my mind that a good essay is a long essay, so I have a tendency for wordiness. To elongate an essay, I tend to add needless words and sentences. For
example, in the rough draft of the Whole Process Essay, I added several unrelated occurrences to elongate the paragraphs. Although my essays were
long and wordy, the professor commented on vagueness and unclearness within the whole process and practice essay. Sometimes, I disregard the fact
that the reader might not know what it is I am writing about or the sentence makes perfect sense to me. The latter is the most common, I quickly read
the sentence and it appears fine to me. Within the Whole Process Essay, another weakness was brought to my attention. I lack structure, a key element
in effective writing. Within the same essay and a few others, I simply added what felt right, sometimes the result would be acceptable but in other

Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Long beach, California is every ghetto place and much, happen there. From shootings, robbing, and
even gangs . According to the book its anonmyous who these students are. Although the book doesnt say names, theres something about them that they
all have in commen. These students have been through alot and have not had a happy life. They always had it bad, and didnt take the right path due to
there dessiones. But this all changed when they all went into freshmen year and meet this beautiful young women named Ms.Gurwell. This teacher is
always committed to her work and is always willing to help others through their roughest times. She would always ask her boss for fun rasiers, books,
computers,etc. But it all seemed like everything she said was careless to the teachers, secutery, and even her boss. But not until one day when
everything started to change....show more content...
But not until this boy drew a piture of one of his classmates that disrespected him in so many ways. Thats when Ms.Gurwell stood up for him and
started to talk about the holocost, and how that all started, by just one picture or saying. The next morning she came in the class with tons of books
and notebooks. She explained how the class would be reading a book and each day if they wanted to write about a thought or feeling that had, they
were to write it in that notebook. She did whatever it took for these kids to learn about something! She knew she had to change this school for the
better but not one person agreed with her and cared less what she did with that
