6. History of Yoga..
THE VEDAS
The early writings on
yoga were transcribed
on fragile palm leaves
that were easily
damaged, destroyed or
lost. The development
of yoga can be traced
back to over 5,000
years ago, but some
researchers think that
yoga may be up to
10,000 years old old.
PRE-
CLASSICAL
The most renowned
of the Yogic
scriptures is the
Bhagavad-Gîtâ,
composed around
500 B.C.E. Krishna
explains karma,
jnana, and bhakti
yoga, or the yogas of
action, knowledge,
and devotion.
Classical
This period is
defined by Patanjali’s
Yoga-Sûtras, the first
systematic
presentation of yoga.
Patanjali is often
considered the father
of yoga and his
Yoga-Sûtras still
strongly influence
most styles of
modern yoga..

POST
CLASSICAL
A few centuries after
Patanjali, yoga
masters created a
system of practices
designed to rejuvenate
the body and prolong
life. These physical-
spiritual connections
and body centered
practices led to the
creation of what we
primarily think of yoga
in the West: Hatha
Yoga.
MODERN
In the late 1800s
and early 1900s,
yoga masters
began to travel to
the West, attracting
attention and
followers. Yoga
becomes
increasingly
popular and
spreads to the
west.

12. Some fascinating facts and figures..
Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American essayist, poet, philosopher, abolitionist,
naturalist, tax resister, development critic, surveyor, and historian. A leading transcendentalist,
In 1849 in a letter to his friend H.G.O. Blake, he wrote about yoga and its meaning to him:
“Free in this world as the birds in the air, disengaged from every kind of chains, those who practice yoga gather
in Brahma the certain fruits of their works. Depend upon it that, rude and careless as I am, I would fain practice
the yoga faithfully. The yogi, absorbed in contemplation, contributes in his degree to creation; he breathes a
divine perfume, he hears wonderful things. Divine forms traverse him without tearing him, and united to the
nature which is proper to him, he goes, he acts as animating original matter. To some extent, and at rare
intervals, even I am a yogi.”

postures, breathing patterns and meditation.
You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga - you will develop it eventually
There are many different styles of yoga that you can choose from - just
choose the right one!
And Most of all always remember yoga is a journey and make sure you
take the next step to self realization.

Why I choose Yoga as topic?
Speaking on a topic that i am familiar with
Wanted to share the original intent of the yogis and their journey to enlightenment
Yoga is more than poses/ asanas
When I started yoga about 5 years ago, for me yoga was just about performing a headstand or rather being flexible to different poses. Only during my practise did I realise yoga is more than postures.
Disclaimer :
This presentation is not to promote any religion, also does not intend any religion or community. The entire presentation is based of internet search, and is for purpose of sharing knowledge, on a best effort basis. There was loads of more information available on this topic, however only the relevant and the one in line with the scriptures has been presented.
Steps of self realization - there are many schools of thought, for the purpose of simplicity have used Patanjali yoga sutra.
So the question that arises is What is yoga?
The question that comes to the mind is if humans have made so much progress, have built technology etc. They why are we still unhappy?
Thousands of years ago it was studied that our sensory organs seek outwardly, hence we are bound to seek outward happiness.
The answer to that this we are looking for external objects to find happiness. As a result our mind and intellect always remain entangled. These changes keep of the mind oscillating between pain and pleasure. Modern scientific inventions have failed to give lasting happiness.
But the sages of ancient India found a unique technique of keeping the mind free and peaceful. This technique is documented in the yoga sutras of patanjali
1. Patanjala Yoga Sutra: Sage Patanjali defines yoga as “a method to stop thought waves”. According to Patanjali, any technique that keeps the mind (chitta) away from disturbance (वृत्ति) can be called yoga. In other words, the state where the mind (chitta) ceases to exist (samadhi) is called yoga.
We seek answers to this lets looks at the origin of yoga :
As most of us know Yoga was spoken widely by Lord
The Vedas
Preclassical
Classical -Written some time in the second century, this text describes the path of Raja Yoga, often called "classical yoga". Patanjali organized the practice of yoga into an "eight limbed path" containing the steps and stages towards obtaining Samadhi or enlightenment.
In the yogic culture, Shiva is not known as a god, but as the “Adiyogi” or the “first yogi” – the originator of yoga. He was the one who first put this seed into the human mind. According to the yogic lore, over fifteen thousand years ago, Shiva attained to his full enlightenment and abandoned himself in an intense ecstatic dance upon the Himalayas. When his ecstasy allowed him some movement, he danced wildly. When it became beyond movement, he became utterly still.
Bhagavad Gita - 700 Verses all having a mention of Yoga.
Patanjali wrote the yoga sutras 196 verses
Gautam Buddha - attained enlightenment
Post classical - They rejected the teachings of the ancient Vedas and embraced the physical body as the means to achieve enlightenment. They developed Tantra Yoga, with radical techniques to cleanse the body and mind to break the knots that bind us to our physical existence. This exploration of these physical-spiritual connections and body centered practices led to the creation of what we primarily think of yoga in the West: Hatha Yoga.
ou have received good answers for the number of yoga asanas. But for the sake of going deeper to the heart of the matter let's consider that there is actually only one Yoga asana: Easy Pose (or the likes).
All the other asanas can be combined and, hopefully, properly executed for optimum health. This good health in turn reduces obstacles to the one pose of sitting in a comfortable and aligned position for meditation.
The seated position is the only asana you find in the work of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Specifically because the ultimate goal is to know Yoga (union) or knowledge of the Self as "One Without an Second".
This union cannot be achieved till we are in complete stillness and are experiencing pleasure in the every posture.
Fain - pleased or willingly
Some Hollywood personalities such as Madonna and others also spread the awareness of yoga. Yoga has also become a big industry for Yoga clothes . I was reading one report and it said that
Yoga has become famous because if you need healthy body one must work on Flexibility , strength , balance and aerobics . Yoga is perfect answer and perfect balance for Flexibility , strength , balance and aerobics .
These days people are so stressed and sitting long hours at desk people need good stretch and deep breathing and yoga can be perfect gift for someone who is willing to opt healthy lifestyle.
Multiple studies have confirmed the many mental and physical benefits of yoga.
Incorporating it into your routine can help enhance your health, increase strength and flexibility and reduce symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety.
Finding the time to practice yoga just a few times per week may be enough to make a noticeable difference when it comes to your health.
