4. 1. INTRODUCTION
Yoga is an ancient art that originated from India
and was developed by the Indus - Sarasvati
civilization in Northern India over 5000 years ago.
The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root
word Yuj meaning to bind. Yoga is the most
favorable method to connect to nature by
balancing the mind and body. The word Yoga was
first mentioned in the oldest sacred texts, the Rig
Veda. Adi Yogi Shiva is the founder of Yoga. One
who follows the path of Yoga is YOGI or YOGIN.
YOGI simply means an expert teacher.
5. 2. ABOUT YOGA
It is a type of activity or exercise performed through the
balanced body, free mind and soul. The name given to the
body health exercise is YOGASANAS. Yogasanas give
sufficient exercise to the external organs as well as internal
organs. It helps human to get control over mental,
emotional and spiritual thoughts. The set of body exercise
was compiled by Sage Patanjali. For the last few years Yoga
became popular as an exercise and is now practiced all over
the world but our Indian community has almost forgotten
it. Thanks to Baba Ramdev for introducing it again in India
and the trend is seen increasing in recent years. It is
accepted universally because it has no barriers in sex, caste,
creed, religion, nation, language, color, age or any other
distinction. Yoga is therefore a global language and religion.
6. 3. INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY
The concept of International Yoga Day was proposed by our Prime
Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The initiative was established in 2014,
and the United Nations declared in December 2014 that 21st June

assigned for the occasion as it is the longest day when the sun is
out at its most compared to every other day of the year.
Celebrated on June 21, International Yoga day celebrates the
physical and spiritual powers that Yoga has brought to the world
stage. While it is important source of exercise and healthy activity,
millions join in and practice on a daily basis.

10. 8 LIMBS OF YOGA continued…
The name “8 Limbs” comes from the Sanskrit term
Ashtanga and refers to the eight limbs of Yoga. Ashtanga
Yoga is Patanjali’s classification of Classical Yoga, as set out
in his Yoga sutras. He defined the eight limbs as Yama
(External Discipline), Niyama (Internal Discipline), Asana
(Postures-Meditation Seat), Pranayama (Breath Control),
Pratyahara (Withdrawal of senses), Dharana
(Concentration), Dhyana (Meditative absorption), and
Samadhi (Union, integration). The eight limbs form a
sequence from the outer to the inner.
In the Yoga sutras, Patanjali describes an eight fold path to
right living. In the practice of Yoga, individuals are
dedicated to creating a union between mind, body and
spirit. Patanjali’s eight limbs outline a way to achieve and
practice that balance. The eight limbs act as a guide for
yogis to live a life of integrity, self-discipline, respect for
nature and the spiritual aspects of life.
11. 8 LIMBS OF YOGA continued…
The Eight Limbs of Yoga include:
1. Yama: Five universal, ethical and moral standards to live life by non-violence,
truthfulness, non-stealing, continence and non-covetousness.
2. Niyama: Five spiritual and self-discipline observances- Cleanliness,
contentment, spiritual austerities, study of scriptures and surrender to God.
3. Asana: Physical Yoga postures that help the body learn to focus and take care of
the physical self, which is considered a temple of the spirit in yogic practice.
4. Pranayama: Breathing exercises which develop control of the breath are
thought to provide long life.
5. Pratyahara: Control over the senses through practice of transcending the
external world or stimuli, bringing focus inward.
6. Dharana: Concentration on inner awareness or on a single point by removing all
other distractions.
7. Dhyana: Meditation or contemplation on the divine, which includes an
unbroken flow of concentration and quieting of the mind.
8. Samadhi: Union with the divine through transcending the self, this stage
includes feelings of deep peace and ecstasy.
Often, popular Yoga that is practiced in classes for fitness or health reasons does
not incorporate the full eight limbs, focusing primarily only on Asana and
Pranayama. However, individuals can benefit greatly from learning and practicing
the eight limbs in addition to a physical yoga practice.
