What Is Sociology?
➢Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions.
➢Sociology’s subject matter is diverse, ranging from crime to religion, from the family to the state, from
the divisions of race and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, and from social stability
to radical change in whole societies.
➢Unifying the study of these diverse subjects of study is sociology’s purpose of understanding how human
action and consciousness both shape and are shaped by surrounding cultural and social structures.
Why Sociology is a Science?
➢According to Auguste Comte and Durkheim, “Sociology is a science because it adopts and applies
the scientific method. Sociology does make use of scientific methods in the study of its subject
matter.
➢Auguste Comte opines like other natural sciences sociology also governed by some natural laws.
➢Following reasons explains why sociology is a science:
▪ Sociology adopts scientific method.
▪ Objectivity is possible in Sociology.
▪ Sociology describes cause-effect relationship
▪ Sociology makes accurate measurement:
Emile Durkheim’s views
➢According to Durkheim, all elements of society, including
morality and religion, are part of the natural world and
can be studied scientifically.
➢In particular, Durkheim sees his sociology as the science
of institutions, which refer to collective ways of thinking,
feeling, and acting. A fundamental element of this
science is the sociological method, which Durkheim
formulated specifically for this purpose.
➢Social facts is the foundational claim for Durkheim’s sociology, and make up the subject matter for
sociology.
➢A social fact (Rules) is “a category of facts which present very special characteristics: they consist
of manners of acting, thinking, and feeling external to the individual, which are invested with a
coercive power by virtue of which they exercise control over him”
➢For Durkheim, a society is not merely a group of individuals living in one particular geographical
location. Rather, a society is an ensemble of ideas, beliefs, and sentiments of all sorts that are
realized through individuals; it indicates a reality that is produced when individuals interact with
one another, resulting in the fusion of individual consciences.
➢The psychic reality that society is greater than the sum of its parts; it supercedes in complexity,
depth, and richness, the existence of any one particular individual.
➢Durkheim identifies different kinds of social facts with constraint remaining a key feature of each.
For example, social facts include a society’s legal code, religious beliefs, concept of beauty,
monetary system, ways of dressing, or its language.
Durkheim’s Rules
➢The first and most important rule is to treat social facts as things. This means that social facts
have an existence independent of the knowing subject and that they impose themselves on the
observer.
➢The next rule for studying social facts is that the sociologist must clearly delimit and define
the group of phenomena being researched.
➢Durkheim applies these rules to empirical evidence that he draws primarily from statistics,
ethnography, and history. Durkheim applies the law of causality to the data.
➢ He uses a comparative-historical approach, which he sees as the core of the sociological
method, to eliminate extraneous causes and find commonalities between different societies and
their social facts.
Why some sociologists called it as “not a
SCIENCE”
➢German Sociologist Max-weber and many others do not accept sociology as a Science
because:
▪ Lack of Generalisation
▪ Terminological Inefficiency:
▪ Lack of Prediction:
▪ Lack of Experimentation
Sociologist Robert Bierstedt and Sociology
➢Sociologist Robert Bierstedt in his book “The social order” clearly explain the nature of
Sociology in the following way:
▪ Sociology is a social and not a natural science.
▪ Sociology is a positive and not a normative science.
▪ Sociology is a pure science and not an applied science.
▪ Sociology is an abstract science and not a concrete science.
▪ Sociology is a generalizing science and not a particularizing science.
▪ Sociology is both a rational and an empirical science.
