4. SIGNS OF PREGNANCY:
• PRESUMPTIVE
• Amenorrhea, fatigue, nausea & vomiting, breast
changes, quickening, urinary frequency.
• PROBABLE
• Goodell’s sign,
• Chadwick’s sign,
• Hegar’s signs,
• ballottement, positive pregnancy tests (serum, urine),
• Braxton Hicks ctx.
• POSITIVE
• Hearing fetal heart tones, visualization of the fetus, and
palpating fetal movement, visualizing fetal movements.

5. DIAGNOSIS IN FIRST TRIMESTER-
• SYMPTOMS-
• 1. CESSATION OF MENSTURATION(MISSED PERIODS)- due to
increased P+E hormones from corpus luteum
-Hartman’s sign/ placental sign- scanty bleeding pv at time of expected
periods, (rare)
-should rule out threatened abortion

6. • 2. Morning sickness: 50% cases
• 3.Frequency of micturition –due to congestion of bladder mucosa,
irritation of bladder by pregnant uterus,
• resting of bulky uterus on the bladder,
• change in maternal osmoregulation –leads to increased thirst and
polyuria,
• disappear usually after 3rd month

7. • 4. BREAST symptoms- enlargement, heaviness, discomfort and
pricking sensation
• 5.APPETITE CHANGES – Craving for certain type of food and refusal
for some
• 6. FATIGUE- tendency to sleep

8. OBJECTIVE SIGNS-
• 1. BREAST SIGNS-
• 6-8 WEEKS
• INCREASE SIZE AND VASCULARITY- DILATED VISIBLE VEINS
• SECONDARY AREOLA- increased pigmentation of nipple and primary
areola
• Appearnce of Montgomery tubercles in areola( dilated sebaceous
glands)
• Colostrum expression – as early as 12 weeks
