3. Recently, the Financial Post reported
that "There are now 90 publicly listed
companies in Canada with a market
value of $31 billion."
Cannabis is a market that is expected to
outperform pop and porn and become a
multi-billion dollar industry in the years
to come. Currently, the cannabis stocks
are volatile, but this is expected, and we
have seen similar occurrences in the
dot-com era.
Yes, it will be volatile from here until
well after six months or so after
legalization. Over-evaluation and market
hype are the driving factors now...
but do your research and you will see
there are many ways to participate in
the huge cannabis stock market.
Legalization rules and regulations are
constantly changing and with that, will
add to the volatility, in addition to the
larger LPs going into hyper acquisitions
mode.
Much like the dot-com boom, things
will settle in six months, so depending
on your long or short term investment
goals there are still lots of exciting new
opportunities, just choose wisely!
Remember, this industry is still in its
infancy and has lots of room for growth
and errors.

introduction: cannabis
why knowledge matters
Understanding the industry is incredibly important as an investor. Many
of those in the corporate world are new to this growing industry, which
means tons of new product types and terminology that an investor may
not understand.
As a consumer, you would never purchase a product that you didn't
understand. So, why would you invest in one? Taking the time to do
your research, familiarizing yourself with the industry, and truly
understanding what's on the market can work wonders for the success
of your portfolio.

defining: CBD vs. THC
The process of cannabis within the body
is easy to understand. Compounds
within the plant, cannabinoids, enter the
body and affect cannabinoid receptors.
This provides a boost to the functions of
those receptors. Some cannabinoids are
even produced naturally within the body
or within other plants/spices.
The best known cannabinoids are Delta
9 Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and
Cannabidiol (CBD)
THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid that’s
responsible for the traditional symptoms
of cannabis consumption. When THC
gets into a person’s system, it bonds
mostly with receptors in areas of the
brain responsible for pleasure, memory,
eating, and coordination. THC acts with
another cannabinoid, anandamide,
Together, they boost receptor activity
prompting increased feelings of pleasure
and relaxation while interrupting
processes connected to memory and
hunger. This creates the commonly
known “stoned” effects of cannabis
consumption.
In contrast, CBD antagonises receptors
instead of bonding to them, provoking
stimulation, particularly in the receptors
found around the body, not just the
brain. This increases function of the
receptors producing effects such as pain
relief and relaxation without disrupting
the brain’s communications. With CBD,
there are none of the stoner effects of
THC.
The distinction between these two
cannabinoids, and their effects, are
important for investors looking at
cannabis stocks, but also for consumers.
Understanding the difference between
THC and CBD products is crucial for
customers to match their purchases to
their desires and expectations.

EBOOK: CANNABIS TERMS FOR INVESTORS
There are two main species of cannabis
plants, Sativa and Indica. Each plant
has a variety of strains that accentuate
different parts of the plant and by
extension has different effects when
consumed. Both plants are used for
recreational and medical marijuana,
with hybrids between the two used for
targeting certain conditions and
desired states.
Sativa plants are larger, they thrive on
being grown outdoors. Products derived
from sativa plants have uplifting effects
that focus on mood, mental state, and
emotional sensation. They tend to find
use in the treatment, prescribed or
otherwise, of mood conditions such as
anxiety or depression. They can also be
used by consumers who wish to steady
their focus and improve their creativity.
Because of their more stimulatory
nature, usage of sativa products is more
common during the day.
Well-known Sativa strains include: Sour
Diesel, Strawberry Cough, Lemon Haze,
Super Silver Haze
Indica strains deliver a more sedentary
experience. Relaxing, full-body effects,
make them the go-to for pain relief
products and insomnia treatments.
Consumption usually takes place at
night due to these properties. Indica
plants are shorter than their Sativa
relatives and indoor growing is usual to
reflect the mountain origins of Indica
strains. Cultivation times for Indica
strains are also shorter than Sativas.
Well-known Indica strains: Bubba Kush,
Blue Cheese, Northern Lights, Death
Star
Cannabis, as with other plants used by
humans over the millenia, can be
genetically manipulated through
growing techniques. Some of these
manipulations have focused on pest
resistance, shorter cultivation times,
and increased flowering whilst others
have been to create strains that evoke
specific sensations and treat certain
conditions.
Well-known hybrid strains: Pineapple
Express, Blue Dream, Trainwreck, White
Widow
Knowing the difference between Indica
and Sativa is an essential step before
investing in cannabis. Knowing the
difference between the plants and their
effects informs the type of products
they will be used for and the type of
audience they have.

products: edibles
As more states switch from medicinal
only to recreational cannabis usage and
as millennial consumers seek healthier
ways to partake, such as edibles,
cannabis companies are increasingly
looking at edibles as the next growth
area within the booming cannabis
market.
A Deloitte report on the Canadian
cannabis industry estimated smoking
revenues at $5 billion in 2019 but the
edibles sector, once legalized and
established, at between $12 and $22
billion.
The truth is, heat causes chemical
reactions within the plant. When
smoking, combustion causes the
conversion of other cannabinoids into
THC by burning off some of the
molecules. It also creates by-products
such as carcinogens. When cannabis is
cooked, or heated, a similar process
occurs on a smaller scale.
Smoking cannabis delivers THC directly
to the bloodstream, carrying it to the
brain. Once there, it bonds to receptors
causing the traditional symptoms of
recreational cannabis use. This direct
method means effects are felt in a very
short period of time.
However, when you digest cannabis, it is
absorbed by the gut and processed by
the liver. These cannabinoids then enter
the bloodstream and get to the brain.
Overall this process takes longer, but
also lasts longer.
Weed edibles companies provide a way
for consumers to maximize their
experience while minimizing their
consumption but they also work under
two sets of regulation, those pertaining
to cannabis and those pertaining to food
production.

products: smokables
Before investing in cannabis, it’s
important to know a spliff from a joint,
and a joint from a blunt. Yes, they're all
technically different products.
A spliff is a hand rolled cigarette that
contains cannabis and loose leaf
tobacco. Done for several reasons, the
main two are frugality and mitigation.
Parceling the cannabis out into more
cigarettes is a common technique for
making it last longer. However, some
people simply prefer spliff smoking as a
way to mediate cannabis effects,
especially when bought from an illicit
source with unclear origin and potency.
Tobacco helps “level out” the cannabis
allowing the user better self dosing
options.
A joint is a hand rolled cigarette
containing solely cannabis. Smoked like
a normal hand rolled cigarette, it
provides a purer cannabis hit but has
the same potential harm as smoking
such as carcinogens and other toxic by-
products.
A blunt is a cigar that has been
hollowed out, leaving the tobacco leaf
casing, which is then repacked with
cannabis and smoked. In traditional
cigar smoking, inhalation is not usually
undertaken, the amount of nicotine in a
cigar is such that a mouthful of smoke
can deliver an adequate dose through
the lining of the mouth. With a blunt,
though, it occupies the same scale
relationship to a joint that a cigar does
to a cigarette, inhalation is common.
Much is made of the emerging edibles
market and declining desire to smoke in
younger demographics; but smoking still
accounts for over 50% of all consumed
cannabis. Which means smoking
methods, and their associated
paraphernalia, will still be an option for
those investing in cannabis for years to
come.

products: dabbing
Cannabis dabbing is a process of
inhaling cannabis from a refined
extract. The name derives from
applying a small dab of extract to a dab
rig. A rig is similar in appearance to
traditional water pipes, such as bongs,
but instead of having a bowl of
smokable substance there’s a metal
aperture, the nail, which is heated to
high temperature. When the dab of
product is applied to the heated nail. it
evaporates and is inhaled by
simultaneously drawing on the
mouthpiece of the dab rig. Extracts are
a healthier form of smoking with the
same quick onset effects.
In traditional smoking methods
terpenes are combusted not inhaled so
dabs provide a quick cleaner hit, with a
stronger high, more socially congruent
with recreational cannabis.
For this reason dabbing has become
more popular amongst recreational
cannabis users in recent years at the
same time as it’s gained newsroom
notoriety. Often this notoriety is
misplaced, while smoking anything
carries health risks,
As millennials continue to grow as the
dominant demographic in the cannabis
market, their desire for cleaner
cannabis methods (in production and
consumption) will increase, and we’ll
see smoking methods like joint and
bong use that expose the user to
carcinogens, replaced with cleaner
smoking methods like dabbing or vapes

Not everybody that wants to benefit
from cannabis’ medicinal properties
wants to get high. THC, the
psychoactive element of cannabis, is
not the only cannabinoid found in
cannabis, another is CBD, which is not
psychoactive and operates in a
fundamentally different way.
Cannabinoids found in cannabis are
lipophilic, meaning they bond to lipids
(fats) rather than being soluble in
water. For this reason cannabis edibles
tend to include butter or cream and
cannabis topicals to come in the form
of creams, butters or oils. The
cannabinoids need a lipid to bond with
but not necessarily something as “fatty”
as butter or cream though, any lipid
will suffice.
Cannabis companies that produce
topicals primarily utilize CBD for the
treatment of skin conditions and
localized pain relief through the
application of creams or salves but it
can also be used for massage oils and
other forms of relaxation, such as
bathing products or body lotions.
A medical marijuana company
providing CBD centric cannabis for pain
relief is offering a safer and healthier
alternative.
CBD products can be applied directly to
affected areas providing quicker relief
than an orally delivered painkiller.
Targeting of pain in this way is not only
efficacious but reduces the need to
subject the entire body to a more
powerful painkiller.
Inflammatory conditions such as
arthritis are generally associated with
the elderly but over 250,000 children
suffer from arthritic conditions in the
US. A study by the British Society for
Rheumatology indicated that receptors
targeted by CBD were a component of
inflammatory complaints.
Dermatological conditions such as
eczema or psoriasis treated with CBD-
infused products have shown great
effects in early trials. Research
undertaken at the University of
Colorado tested CBD compounds and
measured results accordingly with 40
patients suffering from various skin
conditions.
As more health benefits are ratified by
scientific research and consumers
continue to seek healthier methods of
ingesting cannabis, the topical market
will continue to expand and grow.

EBOOK: CANNABIS TERMS FOR INVESTORS
defining: landraces
A landrace is the archetypal version of a
plant that developed to meet its
environment. Cannabis is an adaptive
plant, varying in shape and size and
thriving, earning its weed moniker.
Cultivars are different species of plant
derived from a landrace, through natural
variation or genetic breeding by humans
who have kept cannabis stocks as part of
their societies for at least 3,000 years.
In South America where there may be
many other plants to compete with for
sunlight and moisture, taller sativa
plants are grown with their large
familiar leaves. In more mountainous
regions, such as India or Afghanistan,
the shorter, bushier indica cannabis
plants grow quicker and closer to the
ground, than sativas, maximising limited
resources. In places like Columbia, both
types have been known to grow with the
flatter wetter sea-level areas on the
Atlantic coast. In the northern half of
the northern hemisphere, cannabis
ruderalis grows. While not short and
bushy like an indica or tall and leafy like
a sativa, it only contains trace amounts
of THC.
All three landraces spread through
natural means like climate shifts or
animal migration but also with humans
as they spread across territories.
Ultimately, from these three original
landraces and their offshoots, growers
are able to tailor plants with specific
cultivation and consumption aims.
Either a quick growing, concentrated
strain of cannabis for pain relief or
leafier cannabis plants, with low THC
levels, for soaps and creams that deliver
CBD effects without getting you high.
Tailor made strains, cloned and given to
patients and consumers to grow
themselves, is the ultimate expression of
a tailor made product meeting a
customer’s specific needs.
