The SmartCane device is an assistive technology that attaches to a white cane and uses ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles within 3 meters of a visually impaired user, alerting them to hazards through distinctive vibration patterns. It allows independent mobility with increased safety by identifying objects, drop-offs, potholes and other hazards on walking surfaces. The SmartCane has been recognized for enhancing the experience and confidence of visually impaired users to travel independently without collisions. It has received national awards and been distributed by India's Prime Minister to promote safe mobility.
