2. Seton Hall University has launched a search for the Provost and Executive Vice-President and
invites nominations and applications from qualified persons. Seton Hall University (SHU) is a

Home to nearly 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students and offering more than 90
rigorous majors, Seton Hall’s academic excellence has been singled out for distinction by The

58-acre main campus is located in the town of South Orange, New Jersey, only 14 miles from
Manhattan. The University’s nationally-ranked School of Law is located in nearby
Newark, New Jersey. The new Medical School, the College of Nursing and the School of
Health and Medical Sciences will be located at a health science campus nearby in 2018.

The Provost/EVP will work in concert with the faculty to enable the
University to fulfill its mission and meet the expectations of its students, fac-
ulty and alumni. The Provost/EVP will foster a supportive and challenging
academic atmosphere; active learning and research; diversity; stewardship
of natural, human, and financial resources; and a sincere commitment to
Academic Excellence.
It is imperative that the new Provost/EVP forge the best of personal and
professional relationships with all campus constituencies. Seton Hall
University is a caring community of faculty, students and staff working
together in an atmosphere of respect and common purpose. It is expected
that the new Provost/EVP will provide a style of leadership that recognizes
the central importance of continuing to build campus community, consis-
tent with President Esteban’s inclusive and transparent style. The Provost/
EVP must value and support shared governance and actively support faculty
governance structures, including the university’s Faculty Senate and the Fac-
ulty Assemblies of the various academic units. The Provost/EVP must be

teachers and scholars by supporting the careful mentoring of junior faculty
and the continued development and engagement of senior faculty. The Pro-
vost/EVP must support policies that ensure that excellent faculty members
are recruited, supported in their research and teaching, and retained. The
Provost/EVP must equitably allocate resources among departments and
faculty, following transparent and consistent protocols.

The new Provost/EVP must promote and support a robust research agen-
da for SHU that includes greater opportunities for external funding, stu-
dent-faculty collaboration, and excellence in research and scholarship across
academic programs.

Nationally and Internationally
SHU has a broad and varied academic portfolio that includes liberal arts and
professional programs, a well-established and successful Law School, and a
soon to launch Medical School. In order to broaden the reputation of SHU
nationally and internationally, the Provost/EVP will be asked to work in
collaboration with the academic deans and faculty in identifying excellence
in all academic areas and provide resources and strategies for sharing suc-
cessful programs with the global community.
Focus on Student Needs and
Campus Diversity
Students at Seton Hall University are successful and positive about their col-
legiate careers. In an effort to carry out its mission and prepare students for
the 21st century, efforts to reflect diversity, in all of its forms, must continue
to be a priority. This will include faculty hires, student recruitment, program
and curriculum development, community service and outreach. Academic
freedom and growth flourish in an environment that encourages the fullest
possible diversity of ideas and expression. The new Provost/EVP must also
be committed to addressing ways to ensure that the premier educational op-
portunities that SHU offers will be accessible and affordable to all deserving
students.
Promote Program
Development and Assessment
The Provost/EVP will have experience in the development of programs
and ensure that excellence and quality is actively pursued and measured in all
academic and academically related programs. Experience with accreditation
and assessment in support of the accreditation process will be paramount as
the campus deepens its commitment to develop a culture of excellence in all
academic areas. Refining desirable student outcomes and monitoring their
attainment will be significant priorities for the new Provost/EVP.

to the Academic Experience
SHU students, faculty and staff have long understood that learning takes
place in a variety of environments. The opportunity for the Provost/EVP
will be to ensure that the campus is more deliberate in its integration of
curricular and co-curricular experiences and its assurance to students of a
positive and rewarding educational and social experience. In concert with
Student Services, an effort to leverage the University’s holistic approach to
student learning to its fullest advantage will add greatly to an already vibrant
student learning experience.

The Provost/EVP will have a record of scholarly and administrative achievement reflective of SHU’s own standards
of excellence coupled with personal integrity of the highest order. The successful candidate will have the following
attributes:
• An appropriate terminal degree with a record of academic achievement as a teacher/scholar that meets the nec-
essary qualifications of a tenured full professor in an academic department at Seton Hall University.
• An understanding, appreciation, and respect for Seton Hall’s Catholic mission and identity.
• The vision to further effect the implementation of the Seton Hall University Strategic Plan.
• A strong record of success at progressively senior levels in higher education, with specific experiences in manag-
ing at a large, complex, and highly diverse institution.
• An understanding of the complexity of developing and integrating a medical school into a university, or an
equivalent experience in program development.
• Experience with and appreciation of the centrality of academic affairs in the university budget planning process.
• Proven leadership experience working in a liberal arts higher educational institution.
• Experience in curriculum planning and the development of graduate programs.
• Expertise in academic program review and both regional and disciplinary accreditation processes.
• The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse groups and constituencies, on and off campus,
including those involved in faculty governance.
• Demonstrated commitment to the full range of academic programs that characterize a high-quality, comprehen-
sive university (e.g., general education, professional education, graduate and post-baccalaureate studies, teacher
education, service learning and internships).
• Experience with, and a commitment to, shared governance.
• Familiarity with processes and procedures in a multi-campus university system.
• Ability to function effectively as a visionary academic leader of the faculty and senior administrative team.
