anticipated that the Provost/EVP will begin duties during the summer of 2017.
This is an extraordinarily exciting moment in Seton Hall’s distinguished history. As a nationally

the opportunities and challenges facing the University.

LEADERSHIP PRIORITIES
Seton Hall University is experiencing growth and significant momentum and presents exciting and significant
opportunities for the next Provost/EVP. Leadership by a capable new Provost/EVP is essential in addressing these
opportunities and the accompanying challenges, which include the following:
Strengthen A Firm Commitment
to Academic Excellence
Foster Collegial Relationships,
Synergies, and Shared
Governance
Maintain and Strengthen SHU’s
Catholic Character and Mission
Provide Trusted
Leadership for the Faculty
The Provost/EVP will work in concert with the faculty to enable the
University to fulfill its mission and meet the expectations of its students, fac-
ulty and alumni. The Provost/EVP will foster a supportive and challenging
academic atmosphere; active learning and research; diversity; stewardship
of natural, human, and financial resources; and a sincere commitment to
Academic Excellence.
It is imperative that the new Provost/EVP forge the best of personal and
professional relationships with all campus constituencies. Seton Hall
University is a caring community of faculty, students and staff working
together in an atmosphere of respect and common purpose. It is expected
that the new Provost/EVP will provide a style of leadership that recognizes
the central importance of continuing to build campus community, consis-
tent with President Esteban’s inclusive and transparent style. The Provost/
EVP must value and support shared governance and actively support faculty
governance structures, including the university’s Faculty Senate and the Fac-
ulty Assemblies of the various academic units. The Provost/EVP must be
committed to decision-making that is informed, deliberative and effectual,
with clear procedures to move initiatives forward, in keeping with broader
planning initiatives.
In keeping with the University’s Catholic mission, the SHU faculty and
community are committed to educating and fostering students to become
men and women in service to their communities. The Provost/EVP must
convey the Catholic mission of the institution, build on that commitment,
and advance the University’s Catholic heritage and character.
The Provost/EVP should catalyze the faculty in their linked capacities as
teachers and scholars by supporting the careful mentoring of junior faculty
and the continued development and engagement of senior faculty. The Pro-
vost/EVP must support policies that ensure that excellent faculty members
are recruited, supported in their research and teaching, and retained. The
Provost/EVP must equitably allocate resources among departments and
faculty, following transparent and consistent protocols.
3
Enhance SHU’s Status in All
Facets of Research and
Scholarship
SHU has earned a reputation as a leading Catholic research institution
through the work of its nationally and internationally recognized programs.
The new Provost/EVP must promote and support a robust research agen-
da for SHU that includes greater opportunities for external funding, stu-
dent-faculty collaboration, and excellence in research and scholarship across
academic programs.
Broaden the Reputation
Nationally and Internationally
SHU has a broad and varied academic portfolio that includes liberal arts and
professional programs, a well-established and successful Law School, and a
soon to launch Medical School. In order to broaden the reputation of SHU
nationally and internationally, the Provost/EVP will be asked to work in
collaboration with the academic deans and faculty in identifying excellence
in all academic areas and provide resources and strategies for sharing suc-
cessful programs with the global community.
Focus on Student Needs and
Campus Diversity
Students at Seton Hall University are successful and positive about their col-
legiate careers. In an effort to carry out its mission and prepare students for
the 21st century, efforts to reflect diversity, in all of its forms, must continue
to be a priority. This will include faculty hires, student recruitment, program
and curriculum development, community service and outreach. Academic
freedom and growth flourish in an environment that encourages the fullest
possible diversity of ideas and expression. The new Provost/EVP must also
be committed to addressing ways to ensure that the premier educational op-
portunities that SHU offers will be accessible and affordable to all deserving
students.
Promote Program
Development and Assessment
The Provost/EVP will have experience in the development of programs
and ensure that excellence and quality is actively pursued and measured in all
academic and academically related programs. Experience with accreditation
and assessment in support of the accreditation process will be paramount as
the campus deepens its commitment to develop a culture of excellence in all
academic areas. Refining desirable student outcomes and monitoring their
attainment will be significant priorities for the new Provost/EVP.
4
Commitment to Developing
and Enhancing Accountable
Leadership at all Levels of the
University
The next Provost/EVP should be committed to developing and enhancing
the leadership potential of Deans, faculty and staff at all levels of the univer-
sity. By developing, empowering and recognizing decanal, faculty, and staff
leaders, the new Provost/EVP will facilitate innovation and accountability in
academic programs.
Connect a Vibrant Campus Life
to the Academic Experience
SHU students, faculty and staff have long understood that learning takes
place in a variety of environments. The opportunity for the Provost/EVP
will be to ensure that the campus is more deliberate in its integration of
curricular and co-curricular experiences and its assurance to students of a
positive and rewarding educational and social experience. In concert with
Student Services, an effort to leverage the University’s holistic approach to
student learning to its fullest advantage will add greatly to an already vibrant
student learning experience.

of excellence coupled with personal integrity of the highest order. The successful candidate will have the following
